2024 has been a year of constant flux. Late last year, I was informed my role would be made redundant, only to find out it was extended for another year until the end of 2025. While I’m grateful for the extension, my heart goes out to the many colleagues who lost their jobs during the disestablishment of our organisation. This year also brought a personal challenge: a hip replacement, which sidelined me from physical activity—a huge part of my identity. Coupled with the uncertainty of what lies ahead, it’s been a year that’s tested me in every way. So, what have I learned about navigating uncertainty? 1. Control the Controllable I’ve come to accept that there’s a lot I can’t control, and that’s okay. What matters is focusing on what I can control. I can’t change the fact that my role will end next year, but I can control how I prepare for it and what I do next. 2. Surround Yourself with Good People Having the right people around you makes all the difference. I’m fortunate to work with an incredible group who support each other during tough times and celebrate together when things are going well. Find your people—they’re gold. Special mention to katria, Angela, Jane, Jessica and Sarah for the laughs, chats and safe space to talk this year in the office. 3. Talk Whether it’s a whānau member, a friend, a colleague, or a professional, talking makes a difference. I went to counseling this year—not because I was in crisis, but because I wanted to check my tools and ensure I was in the best place possible. It’s a habit I’ll carry forward. 4. Not Everyone’s Cup of Tea And that’s okay—because I prefer coffee anyway. What I’ve learned is that you don’t have to please everyone. Respect is the key to collaboration. We don’t need to be on everyone’s Christmas card list to get good work done. 2024 has been a tough year but also one of immense growth. I’ve learned a lot about myself, and I’m proud of how I’ve handled the challenges. As 2025 approaches, I’m excited about what’s ahead. If you’re taking time off, enjoy the well-deserved break. In an era where companies prioritizing employee well-being are rare, I'm privileged to be part of an organization that truly goes the extra mile. 😀 Recently, my father's health scare left me feeling overwhelmed. Not only was my brain not braining, I also had a critical event (#Metamorphosis) looming with a tight deadline, but I had to be at ICU with my dad. Thankfully, my team's camaraderie and collaboration eased my mind. I neither had the time nor the mindset to sit and walk the team through the tasks. I shared a rough PTO over a text with caption 'Take it from here' and upon my return, I found the project, 'Metamorphosis,' running smoothly. Two things I deeply appreciate about my company: 𝟭) 𝗔 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀, not the other way around. Usually, PTO and crisis management are overwhelming and require a lot of effort. But in emergencies like mine, where I couldn't function at my best, this culture was a lifesaver.💯 𝟮) 𝗠𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱. They checked in on my father's health, ensured I had essentials, and even found the perfect gift to send him. Seeing him open the gift with such joy, taking selfies, and calling it a "blessing from Kirithiga's office" filled me with immense happiness. While this might seem like glorification, I'm simply highlighting the positive impact of my company's actions. I've had my share of challenges and bad days at CUBE84, but as a company, we're constantly striving for a better culture. This experience exemplifies one of those days where we chose to be better.
