Day 2: 30-day Project Management Upskilling Challenge PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROCESSES There are 5 major project management processes according to the Project Management Institute, listed below: 1. Initiating - this is the first phase of the project management process. Here, the project goal is defined, and the project is authorized. The output of this process is often called Project Charter. 2. Planning - here, the project’s scope, time, cost, and other details are determined. The output of this process is a Project plan. 3. Executing - during this phase, the tasks are performed, and resources are utilized to accomplish the project plan. 4. Monitoring and Controlling - the project progress is tracked, and corrective action is taken when necessary to keep the projects on track. 5. Closing - the project’s product, services, or result is accepted by those who authorize it, and the project is brought to an orderly conclusion. While I am working on improving my technical skills, I went over Ms Project which is part of the tool I intend to improve on. Microsoft Project can be used for managing the planning, executing, monitoring, and controlling the different phases of the project. In the days ahead, I will be navigating the Microsoft Project Interface and sharing my journey with you. Image credit: Google #msproject #Projectmanagement #upskilling

"Developing the company's project management capabilities" should be a formal objective of every large and complex project. 🧐 The on time and on budget delivery of a project’s primary goal is an obvious imperative. However, for learning organizations, the definition of “successful project” should be broader than that. The message to project teams should be clear: delivering your project’s primary goal is imperative, but not enough. The project must also position the company to manage future projects of similar size and complexity much more effectively and efficiently. In other words, projects must serve as organizational learning catalysts and elevate the company’s project management maturity. 👨🏽🎓 Here are 5 things you can do to ensure your next large project also delivers on that kind of objective: 👉🏽 Establish a baseline: Assess the company’s project management maturity level and identify what your project’s main contribution should be to elevate it. 👉🏽 Assign dual roles to key project team members: Allocate responsibilities for both project delivery and capability development. 👉🏽 Formalize best practices: Establish a central repository where teams can share methodologies, tools, and successful strategies to standardize project management processes. 👉🏽 Document lessons learned: Create structured milestone reviews to capture what worked well and areas needing improvement, ensuring these insights inform the next project phases. Don’t wait until the end of the project! 👉🏽 Upskill teams during the projects: Provide targeted training and workshops related to the tools and techniques being used in the current project. Large and complex projects are opportunity-rich endeavors that if fully leveraged can do much more for organizations than delivering their primary goals. They can serve as organizational learning catalysts. Having capabilities development as a formal project objective can help to maximize that potential. #projectmanagement #organizationallearning #capabilitiesdevelopment

My approach to demonstrate proficiency in project management according to PMI standards is to emphasize both process adherence and adaptive learning. Start by outlining the project's context, your role, and the structured closure process adhered to, including finalizing deliverables and obtaining stakeholder acceptance. Transition to discussing the lessons learned phase, emphasizing the identification of key insights such as communication challenges, scope adjustments, and successful strategies. Illustrate how these insights were documented and applied to subsequent projects, emphasizing a commitment to continuous improvement. Conclude by reflecting on the impact of these practices, highlighting tangible improvements and feedback received.

Hello everyone! I rarely post on LinkedIn, but this feels like one of those exceptions. Yesterday, I completed the Project Management Foundations course on LinkedIn Learning, and I’d like to share a few key takeaways as part of owning my learning journey. Lately, project management has really caught my interest. It’s often described as a transferable skill that every professional should have, but what does it mean, really? Is it just about working on projects, doing your part, collaborating, and seeing things through to completion? When I had to produce a project management course, I came to learn that project management is a structured process with its own framework, guided by standards set by the Project Management Institute. These practices are detailed in the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) - officially issued by the PMI. After completing this course, two key insights stood out to me: 1. Principles to adhere to: This course reinforced the importance of having a framework to rely on. While we do have ideas on what to do when managing projects, having an official convention helps give other perspectives. Being adept at managing projects, while actually understanding the theory and framework behind them, gives you an edge. Whenever you’re out of your depth, there’s always a “manual” to refer to. Having clear steps—from initiation to closure—brings structure and purpose. We’re not just concocting processes to make things sound complex; each step serves a real purpose. 2. Learning new terminologies: I was introduced to several new terms—some of which label things we’ve already been doing but didn’t have a name for. Why is this important? If you want to solve something, you first need to identify it, articulate it, and name it. My favorite new term? Scope creep—that moment when you’ve defined your project’s scope, and someone says, “Hey, can you add a new one?” Knowing terms like this might not seem groundbreaking, but it can save time and streamline communication. Case in point, compare these examples: Example A: “Hey, there’s a new request added to our already established scope.” Example B: “Hey, we’re experiencing a scope creep.” It’s clear how knowing the right terms can simplify things and help manage projects more efficiently. This course has given me a lot of insights, and I’m looking forward to applying what I’ve learned in future projects. If you’ve taken a similar course or have thoughts on project management, I’d love to hear your take! #ProjectManagementFoundation #LearningJourney
