✅In line with WAJ call for a Global Ban on Factory Farming led by CIWF, Plant-Based diets are promoted for sustainability to 'save resources', with 'Strong economic incentives' to be adopted 'for food industry and consumers'. A key evolution in the new Sustainable Developement Report! 👉 Read the 2024 Sustainable Developement Report here: https://lnkd.in/dxicmn4i "Currently, 38% of total cropland and 30% of water for agriculture is used for animal feed, so limiting protein consumption to recommended levels and increasing the share of proteins derived from plants saves resources. Many countries have taken the opportunity of renewing their Dietary Guidelines to promote healthy and sustainable diets, including Brazil, Germany, and Sweden. This effort must be pursued in other countries and accompanied by strong economic incentives for the food industry and consumers." ❌ Despite this way forward, "animals" are only referred to as "animal stocks", "animal products" or "animal-based products". Still a hard work to do before animals to be protected for themselves in view of this reifying approach... ❓ Discover why WAJ asks to end Factory-Farming Zoocide as a priority to End Animal Crimes here: https://lnkd.in/d5NyUPvc ➡Support CIWF call to End.it in signing here! https://ciwf.end.it/sign/ #PlantProteins #SustainableDevelopment #BanFactoryFarming #CIWF #Endit #EndAnimalCrimes #WorldAnimalJustice

Very happy to be working with the Alliance and now seeing its progress in its first year! 🌱 One year on from the launch of the Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation, we are celebrating the progress made by member countries during Food, Agriculture and Water Day here at COP29, inspiring others to follow their lead, and urging governments & financial institutions to deliver #climatefinance for #foodsystems. We are delighted that the Government of #Tanzania has now announced its intention to join the Alliance, and we very much look forward to seeing what they achieve in partnership with existing members. Here is just a taste of what has been achieved by member countries in the last year: In #Brazil, the promotion of sustainable agroforestry practices via a National Program for Productive Forests (Programa Nacional de Florestas Produtivas). In #Cambodia, the deployment of 1,600 agriculture officers in agricultural communes across the country, developing modern agricultural cooperatives to improve access to markets, capital and water. In #Norway, an annual policy dialogue with farming unions to negotiate policy measures that are tailored to farmers’ needs. In #Rwanda, a commitment by 2030 to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and to reduce food losses in farm production and along supply chains. In #SierraLeone, the implementation of the national flagship ‘Feed Salone’ strategy to drive local food production sustainably. These examples show what’s possible when countries take a ‘whole of government’ approach to food systems transformation. Think of the impact that could be unlocked if more countries signed up to putting food at the centre of their climate action 💡 Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/d5ZuWHtw #COP29 #AllianceOfChampions #ActionOnFood #ACF Jenny Briggs Clement Perry Katie McCoshan @Emma Williams James Stapleton #David Nabarro #Morgan Gillespy @World Resources Institute WRI Food WRI Brasil Valeria Llano Arias Chris Hegadorn

Today we continue our Insider Quotes series, featuring perspectives from our partners committed to advancing sustainable agriculture across Europe. 💬 🌱 Our latest quote comes from Andreas Lidauer M.Sc., Director Sustainability at HOFER Österreich: "We welcome the EUDR, which reinforces our commitment to sustainable and deforestation-free supply chains. It ensures the protection of vital ecosystems, aligning with our values of environmental stewardship and responsible sourcing. However, the EUDR presents significant challenges, particularly the bureaucratic burden and the lack of clear guidelines. We are concerned that these challenges might hinder the legislation from fully realizing its intended benefits. Certification schemes such as Donau Soja can build an important foundation to assure compliance with regard to the EUDR." 🔗Explore how Donau Soja certification supports sustainable practices and helps meet EUDR 🌳 requirements. "You reap what you sow." On World Food Day, the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC) highlights the importance of building sustainable food systems. 💶 As the world is facing accelerating challenges with climate change severely affecting agricultural production and with farmers being front-line victims of these crises, it is clear that at the same time, many agricultural structures and practices also contribute to fuel these crises. To avoid the collapse of our ecosystems, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently mooted "nature-" or "bio-credits" for farmers who adopt reward farmers for taking care of the soil, the land, the water and the air. 🚜 Prof. Thoms Elmqvist, EASAC Environment Programme Director, supports this move: "The EU should take the lead and show a clear pathway forward by introducing new incentives and nature credits for farmers and landowners to enable them to invest in regenerative practices that increase carbon storage and enhance biodiversity while safeguarding agricultural productivity. Our future food production is only protected if both crises are addressed simultaneously with a new system rewarding farmers who adopt sustainable practices." 🐝 Protecting pollinators like bees, essential to our food production, should also be a key element of this effort. Scientific evidence on the harmful effects of neonicotinoids highlights the urgent need to find alternatives to these pesticides. 🥕 EASAC calls on the agricultural industry and policymakers to place scientific evidence at the core of agricultural practices. Only through innovative approaches and the preservation of our ecosystems can we ensure long-term food security for all. 🌿 See our reports on: 🐞 Neonicotinoids and integrated pest management https://lnkd.in/ePn--Cjn 🐑 Regenerative agriculture: https://lnkd.in/ecK38ZiS #WorldFoodDay #Sustainability #Biodiversity #Neonicotinoids #ProtectPollinators #FoodSecurity #EASAC Thomas Elmqvist Tobias Plieninger Louise E.M.
