For children living with #HIV, the physical, social, and financial well-being of their guardians can play a pivotal role in their access to essential health care. We work with partners USAID, Malawi AIDS Counseling Alliance Organization, and others to address these barriers through our project, the Ana Patsogolo Activity, in part by helping establish village savings and loans associations (VSLA). For Hawa, joining her local VSLA in Tisangale #Malawi gave her the chance to take out a loan to start a small business. Her now thriving restaurant enables her to keep her grandchildren, including those living with HIV, well-fed, in school, and on consistent HIV treatment. A Better Life for Every Child: Samath Global’s Efforts to Fight Malnutrition This World Food Day On World Food Day 2024, the theme “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future” emphasizes the critical need to ensure everyone, particularly children, has access to nutritious food. Access to food is a fundamental human right, and ensuring that this right is met is vital for building a healthier, more prosperous future. Malnutrition, on the other hand, can lead to stunted growth, impaired cognitive abilities, and a weakened immune system. These challenges not only impact a child’s future health but also contribute to a cycle of poverty and reduced productivity in adulthood. In the 2024 Global Hunger Index, India ranks 105th out of the 127 countries with sufficient data to calculate 2024 GHI scores. With a score of 27.3 in the 2024 Global Hunger Index, India has a level of hunger that is serious. India's GHI Score is based on the values of four component indicators: 13.7% of the population is undernourished (Low) 35.5% of children under five are stunted (Very high) 18.7% of children under five are wasted (Low) 2.9% of children die before their fifth birthday (Very high) Call to action On World Food Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the Right to Food and recognize that proper nutrition is not a privilege but a basic right. By ensuring children in India receive nutritious food, we can build a future that is healthier, more equitable, and full of opportunities for all. Contribution by Samath Global Food Consultants Samath Global Food Consultants has made significant contributions to child nutrition by developing fortified Ready-to-Cook (RTC) mixes and fortified instant drink mixes. By fortifying these mixes with 20-50% of the RDA of vital vitamins and minerals, Samath Global addresses micronutrient deficiencies that are prevalent in many regions in India. These fortified products offer a practical solution to combat malnutrition, providing children with the right blend of nutrients to support growth, cognitive function, and overall health. On the occasion of World Food Day, Samath Global Food Consultants demonstrated their commitment to child nutrition by donating fortified malt powders specifically developed for children. This initiative reflects Samath Global’s ongoing dedication to improving access to nutritious foods for underprivileged children, reinforcing the "Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future". By making these donations, they aim to combat malnutrition and support healthier futures for children, especially in areas where nutritional deficiencies are prevalent.
WORLD FOOD DAY! October 16th, 2024. This World Food Day, we embraced the theme "Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future." We had the privilege of visiting a local orphanage, where we distributed fortified foods to ensure that these wonderful children have access to the nutrition they deserve. Every child has the right to healthy food, which is essential for their growth and development. Together, let’s advocate for food equality and work towards a brighter, healthier future for all. #RightToFood #WorldFoodDay #BetterFuture #NutritionMatters #GivingBack

Post-Budget PSA! Did you know: -that 50% of Canadians who are food insecure have a disability? See: https://lnkd.in/ge7e9xQJ -that disabled people are disproportionately represented among people who are evicted from housing? See: https://lnkd.in/gYyVpHQS -that there is in fact no law requiring “all buildings to be accessible” and that many disabled people can’t even visit their friends or loved ones at their homes because of a basic lack of accessible spaces? See: https://lnkd.in/gtDy4qfV -that our Medical Assistance in Dying regime in Canada says that if you have a disability there is no need for you to be terminally ill to proceed with MAID? With yesterday’s announcement of a Canada Disability Benefit that offers disabled people who cannot work a mere $200/month and only if they qualify for the Disability Tax Credit, the Federal government has made crystal clear the lack of value they place on disabled people’s lives. Even *if* you are receiving ODSP this would only take you to $1500/month. And with no guarantee that it won’t be clawed back anyway, you are still sitting firmly below the poverty line. See: https://lnkd.in/gYK4srcz Many disabled people don’t qualify for the Disability Tax Credit too because they live with disabilities that are episodic and don’t meet the ‘severe’ AND ‘prolonged’ criteria. There was so much hope in disabled people that the CDB would truly offer a way out of legislated poverty. It is not the case. Please take care of yourselves today. And as for everyone else, don’t you think it’s beyond time to stop treating disabled people like this?

Globally each year, unsafe foods cause about 600 million preventable cases of foodborne illnesses. This means that unsafe foods have a health burden comparable to that of malaria, HIV/AIDS, or tuberculosis. DNV strives each day to enhance the food value chain in order to protect and strengthen the health of the global public and work towards Sustainable Development Goal 2 - to reach zero hunger globally by 2030. Today, on World Food Safety Day, in line with the theme of preparing for the unexpected, we highlight the importance of proactively safeguarding against risks of foodborne illnesses. One way to do this is to strengthen the efficiency and timeliness of food recalls. Today and every day, it is important to ignite conversations on how to ensure the safety of food supplies that feed people around the world. We invite you to learn more about ways to prevent foodborne illnesses here: https://dnv.social/5lW #FoodSafety #WorldFoodSafetyDay #DNV

To enable Walmart Global #FoodSafety to stay current on industry research, I started a Food Safety Journal Club! We had our first meeting yesterday, and the discussion was fabulous! Typically when we think about foodborne illness outbreaks, we think about the food itself and work to learn how it came to be contaminated. This paper, published recently in the International Association for Food Protection's open access Journal of Food Protection, turns that concept on its head and instead looks at the patients themselves and compares them to controls within their same communities to understand if there are social stressors/factors that affect the odds of getting a #foodborneillness. Interestingly, the authors showed that as a person's social vulnerability index increases (esp. their socioeconomic status), there are increased odds that said person may contract foodborne illness. This work highlights the criticality of Walmart's customer value proposition and our #EDLP mission! Not to mention, the work we are doing within food safety to understand the cold chain parameters around #lastmiledelivery operations is imperative for those living in food deserts who may only have access to food through our delivery services. More to be done for sure, but a great reminder of the importance of the work we all do in food safety!
