The impact of #climatechange on communities is highly context-specific. Our responses should be, too. From rural to urban environments, inside and outside the classroom, communities are building climate resilience: - In #Benin, communities are gathering data on their local ecosystems to reproduce their benefits. - In #Mozambique, communities are receiving grants to fund their projects to create sustainable economic opportunity. - In #Nepal, individuals are sharing their experiences of how climate change exacerbates labor exploitation. - In 5 cities in Asia, students are addressing environmental issues in their communities. The more I read up on ecosystem accounting, the more I'm amazed by the untapped potential it holds, especially for the developing economies of Africa! Imagine a way to quantify the value of the natural services our environment provides, such as water supply and carbon storage. By integrating this data into policy and decision-making, governments can better understand the environmental impacts of economic growth. A UNEP study in South Africa's Thukela River basin highlights how restoring degraded ecosystems can improve livelihoods, bolster water supplies, and combat climate change. This approach isn't about putting a price on nature but recognizing its vital role in sustaining economies and communities. #sustainability #climatechange #NaturalCapital https://lnkd.in/d8e8BJj3

The Regenerative Seascapes for People, Climate & Nature (ReSea) Project , a collaborative effort spearheaded by Mission inclusion and the IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa with support from Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, has made significant strides over the past six months. Working across five countries—Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Comoros—the project aims to enhance the resilience of coastal communities to the impacts of climate change through the promotion of Nature-based Solutions #NbS, as well as increase access of women and youth in these communities, to blue economy opportunities. Guided by the three pillars of the project – #BluePlanet, #BlueNature, and #BluePeople – this first edition of the Project Newsletter highlights the significant milestones the project has made. Recognizing the critical role partnerships play in sustainable development, we’re bringing together the different actors in each of the five seascapes to address the challenges faced by nature and people because of climate change. We’re collaborating with governments as they lead efforts towards marine and coastal conservation by providing support in the development and implementation of management plans to ensure they meet their priorities for coastal adaptation. Local civil society organizations bring with them a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by people and nature in the project sites. Local communities too, bring indigenous knowledge which will help inform actions that we take. Establishing connections with these actors enhances synergies and access to resources. By collaborating with other programs, we aim to ensure inclusivity in governance mechanisms, adaptation to Nature-based Solutions and create a more comprehensive support network for the local communities particularly women and youth, the vulnerable and marginalized As the #ReSea Project continues to unfold, the focus will remain on empowering communities, particularly women, to lead conservation efforts and advocate for Nature-based Solutions. By building on the successes of the past six months, the project aims to further strengthen the resilience of coastal communities across the five project countries, ensuring that they are better equipped to face the challenges posed by climate change.

Communities around the world are creating solutions to adapt to and mitigate #climatechange, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. Despite this, from 2003 to 2016 less than ten percent of global climate funds reached local groups. At #COP16, participating countries agreed to create a formal subsidiary body to ensure the involvement of local groups in conservation efforts. #COP29 is focused on delivering climate financing to the communities that need it most. There is progress being made when donors and implementing partners prioritize equitable, community-based solutions like these: https://brnw.ch/21wOFm8

I feel inspired and motivated after another day at #climateweekNY Very inspired by Julia (Osterman) Strong, Pedro Martins Barata, Kimberly Myers, Rane Cortez panel on the Future of Carbon. After a brief Star Wars reference #newhope, these four individuals proceeded to motivate and challenge my own vision of a carbon future. I was reminded why we are all working hard in this fringe field of climate, with a VCM cap <$2bn. We need to 'bend the curve' together and we cannot get there without NBS. 🌲🌲 🌲 I was also so proud to see José Monteiro speaking about ReGeCom and the very insightful concept of 'Community Information System' to compliment GIS. Linet Misiko is asking for $16M to keep hundreds of community conservancies alive in Kenya in perpetuity. A small ask for that outweighed impact on the ground. Finally, I shared another day of #tooexcited brainstorming sessions with Marisa C. Rodrigues about all the impact we can have with GROUNDD ___ and community conservation enterprises (Nature-based enterprises?). I have a vision for RAMO Earth to be the tech / carbon part of this emerging force for good in a world <+2oC and I truly believe we can do it. My work in #mozambique showed me that we can do the impossible despite wars, literal plagues and cyclones. #letsgo #climate

#ImpactandMore The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) have launched a three year project that will use nature-based solutions to undertake watershed restoration and #climatechange adaptation actions in cities in sub-Saharan Africa. By focusing on actions that restore #naturalsolutions for water management by engaging women and vulnerable communities, the project will mitigate climate change through a gender lens. It seeks to demonstrate the possibility of a ‘triple win’ for climate, society, and biodiversity. The three-year project, which was launched last month, is funded by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada through an award of US$21 million that will advance climate adaptation in African cities through nature-based solutions. The ability of local communities living across natural ecosystems to adapt to the impacts of climate change is inextricably linked to their access to basic socio-economic services as it is to the health of their surrounding ecosystems. Something not often talked about in conservation and action on climate change is how land rights and the establishment of local decision-making bodies are the key to long-term sustainable outcomes. As nearly 90% of West Kalimantan’s population depends on natural resources for their daily livelihoods, effective adaptation programs must integrate efforts to sustain and restore ecosystem functions and promote human rights under the changing climate conditions. Hence, adaptation programs must integrate approaches that 1️⃣ put communities first 2️⃣ identify and address socio-economic drivers of vulnerability 3️⃣ promote resilient livelihoods dependent on natural ecosystems. These three areas are underpinned by recognized tenurial rights and inclusive local governance systems that are catalytic to promoting thriving communities safeguarding healthy tropical ecosystems.
