World Energy GH2 and Ashok Leyland will both bring new perspectives to the Group and we're looking forward to working with them on the global industry transition journey. 🇮🇳 Ashok Leyland is the second largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in India and the fourth largest manufacturer of buses in the world.  It's membership will strengthen crucial green transition work in the transport sector, across its value chains in general and in the heavy vehicle segment in particular. 🇨🇦 World Energy GH2 will use wind power to produce green hydrogen and ammonia. This is my personal curiosity—Are EVs truly the endgame, or just a transition before something bigger takes over? Especially with Big Oil and Gas still deeply influencing the global energy landscape. Key Questions on My Mind: 🔹 Big Oil’s Strategy – Companies like Shell & BP are investing in EV charging but also in biofuels & hydrogen. Are they adapting or buying time? 🔄💰 🔹 Charging vs. Fuel Stations – Can EV infrastructure match the speed & convenience of petrol stations? ⛽⚡ Or will range anxiety remain a barrier? 🔹 Battery Supply Chain Issues – EVs depend on lithium, cobalt & nickel. Will shortages & mining concerns slow adoption? 🔋🌍 🔹 Hydrogen as a Competitor – Many oil companies are betting on hydrogen. Could it overtake EVs in the long run? 🚗💨 🔹 Geopolitics & Policy – Oil-rich nations have different incentives. Will the National Green Hydrogen Mission act as a complimentary or a replacement for Electric Vehicles? Let’s dive into the details 🚗 With alarming environmental concerns and increasing dependency of the automobile industry on fossil fuel, the government has undertaken certain measures to cater for both problems. 🚗 The automobile industry is highly dependent on imports of fossil fuels from international markets, with ~88% of cured oil consumption catered through imports in 2024. 🚗 Indian transportation contributes nearly 14% of total carbon emissions. The National Green Hydrogen Mission has been one of the initiatives to reduce the dependency, achieving a net zero carbon footprint by 2070. 🚗 The government has announced an initial outlay of INR 17,500 crores up to 2030 incentivising manufacturing of electrolysers and production of green hydrogen. 💫 Positive impact of the mission on Automobile Industry: - 🚗 Electric vehicles have played an important role in the industry, but they come with certain challenges, especially in heavy-duty vehicles and public transportation, due to range anxiety, energy density, and underdeveloped infrastructure. 🚗 Hydrogen fuel cells are expected to be range-compatible with Ice engines, with better efficiency and faster re-fueling. It may help in overcoming the shortfalls of heavy-duty electric vehicles. 🚗 While cost is a concern as of now due to the expensive electrolysis process, the industry is developing to reduce the cost to provide desired benefits. 🚗 The industry is committed to achieving 20% ethanol blending by 2025 and scaling hydrogen production. 🚗 Leading companies have either developed or are in the process of prototype development for hydrogen-based commercial vehicles. 💫 Challenges ahead with adoption: - 🚗 The primary concern is with the cost of hydrogen generation, which is expected to be tackled as the production levels scale with time. 🚗 Infrastructure creates another hurdle, as India lacks specialised pipelines, storage and refuelling stations. 🚗 Investments in infrastructure is critical to achieving the goal. The officials expect not only the public-private partnerships but also the auto industry and hydrogen manufacturers to form a joint venture to achieve the objective. The #Indian Government's recent initiative to invest Rs. 496 crore in pilot projects for green #hydrogen in #transportation is a major move towards sustainability. The scheme, led by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), aims to test the feasibility and safety of using hydrogen as a fuel for vehicles and refuelling stations. Goals of the #MNRE Scheme: - Test if green hydrogen can work well in vehicles. - See if it's cost-effective to use green hydrogen-powered vehicles. - Show that it's safe to use hydrogen for vehicles and refuelling stations. What Indian Companies are Doing?: Big vehicle makers like Tata Motors, Volvo Eicher, and Ashok Leyland are working hard to make trucks and buses that run on hydrogen. Energy companies in India are also trying to make more green hydrogen to bring down the cost and compete with regular fuels. How India Benefits: - Less pollution and better for the #environment. - Helps meet goals for fighting climate change. - Reduces the need to buy expensive fossil fuels. - Chance to become a world leader in green hydrogen. Types of Hydrogen: - Grey Hydrogen: Made from natural gas, not great for the environment. - Blue Hydrogen: Also made from fossil fuels, but the emissions are captured and stored. - Green Hydrogen: Made from renewable sources like wind or solar power, only produces water when used. Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles: - Hydrogen ICE Vehicles: These cars burn hydrogen without making #pollution. - Hydrogen FCEVs: These cars use a special cell to turn hydrogen into electricity, and they're lighter than cars with electric batteries. I think the role of Hydrogen in mobility would be limited primarily to heavy duty transportation in specific geographies which have abundant green power and locational benefit of short distances between production and consumption centres……
