Daily IRA/401k/HSA post: There are many reasons for a self-employed individual to consider a Solo 401k (providing one is qualified): 1) Ability to contribute more compared to a SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA ($69,000 when under 50 and $76,500 when 50+) 2) Ability to make after tax AKA Roth contributions 3) No MAGI restrictions on Roth 401k contributions 4) Ability to add spouse as participant, if they are also working in business 5) Unrelated Debt Financed Income Tax (UDFI) Exemption (assuming criteria is met). 6) Ability to rollover pre-tax 401k, Traditional IRA, etc. into Solo 401k, also Roth 401k money. Just can’t rollover Roth IRA funds. 7) With the right financial firm (TPA/Recordkeeper/Custodian) you can self-direct into real estate, private equity, private notes, public assets, and much more.
