This past Sunday, I just finished a 46 day total elimination of #podcasts from my life. Here's what I learned: 1. I had become addicted. Not specifically to podcasts, but to noise. I love podcasts, but I was constantly filling "empty time" with them. The first thing I did when I got into my car was turn on a podcast. If I was cooking any food: podcast. Going for a walk: podcast. Grocery shopping: podcast. I went through what I can only describe as withdrawal the first week... I kept catching myself going through the motions of pulling Airpods out before cooking, opening Spotify when I got in the car, etc. 2. I need more silence in my life. I have a lot going on, like everyone else. I felt worn thin, "like butter scraped over too much bread." I didn't realize part of my problem was that I wasn't getting enough quiet time. Eliminating podcasts has helped my #mentalhealth immensely. My productivity on nights and weekends (when I work on side things) has increased a significant amount. 3. I was missing people and information. Not in a "I miss you being part of my life" (although that too), but more of a "I am not observing others and tasks as closely." I historically felt like podcasts were the perfect multi-tasking. I can get two things done at once! But it separated me mentally from my surroundings more than I thought. Whether that was at the grocery store, at home with my family, or time at the park. There were micro-interactions and observations that I lost when I was intellectually consuming podcasts. It lowered the quality of average life. 4. I don't get as much from podcasts as I thought. Almost all my podcasts were informational or educational. From Supreme Court decision analysis to Chinese culture, news, and language. I thought I was bettering myself, and–although I do think many of those made me "aware" of things–I don't think I retained nearly as much as I led myself to believe. It was a habit, not an education. I haven't yet listened to a podcast again, even though I completed my pre-determined "podcast fast." I'm not sure when I will... Have any of you found similar things to be true.

The state of podcasting in 2024 and what the future holds 🎙 7 takeaways from this year’s Podcast Show in London! 👇 1. “People are spending more time listening to podcasts than on any other social media platform” 🤯 Will Pearson, iHeart Podcasts. 2. There are more podcast listeners than ever before 📈 “In the US for example, ‘on demand’ is now more popular than live audio for the first time.” James Cridland, Editor of Podnews. 3. There has been 60%+ growth in DAILY podcast listening over the past 2 years, with 20% of podcast listeners planning to increase their podcast listening in 2024. 4. “Podcasts need to be community-driven and authentic. Creating a safe space centred around trust will allow for a better connection with your guest and the listener.” Fearne Cotton, Happy Place. 5. “Create the truest version of yourself and demonstrate your passion for the subject. If you don’t care, why should the audience care?” James Corden, SiriusXM 6. “Preparation for an interview is important, but the most important thing is to LISTEN. Sometimes you will get a curveball and need to respond accordingly. Don’t worry about the perfect interview structure - listeners gravitate towards imperfection.” Elizabeth Day, How To Fail. 7. “The right stories can’t exist, unless you have the right person to tell them.” Elizabeth Day on the importance of championing DIVERSE voices within podcasting. I left the big smoke this week feeling incredibly inspired and I’m looking forward to de-briefing with fellow rural podcaster Ben Eagle later today. In the meantime, I’ll be busy editing the latest podcast episodes for Rural Youth Europe, preparing a podcast training session for IGLYO — The International LGBTQI Youth & Student Organisation next week and planning It’s in our Roots Series 5 (😱) with Holly Gilbert AssocRICS. Running ads in your podcast? Make sure you get it right. We're telling podcasters to ensure ads are properly disclosed, using key words like 'sponsored' and musical jingles, in order to ensure listeners don't feel misled. Find out more!
New research from the Committee of Advertising Practice [CAP] on ads in podcasts shows that: - People want there to be clear labels to identify when they’re listening to an ad in a podcast - the terms 'paid-for-advertisement' and 'sponsored' are seen as the most effective. Phrases like “partnered with” or “friend of the show” can be confusing. - In addition to a label, they want there to be signs like a musical jingle or change in tone of the host’s voice, and don’t like ads that they feel are too long. - People have an intimate connection with podcasts, more so than with some other kinds of media. They tend to see podcasting as a cottage industry and have intrinsic trust in hosts. - Respondents also want there to be more care when it comes to personal testimonials from hosts in ads, particularly for sensitive topics like mental health or finance. I might become unpopular after saying this... but I really struggle to get into podcasts 🤯🎙️ Maybe it's because I haven't spent enough time 'trying them on for size' or just haven't found a good one yet or just the sheer, overwhelming, volume of podcasts available. What are your thoughts? Am I alone, or are there great podcast you'd recommend I give a try before definitively saying they are not for me? To help... here are some topics that interest me:- 🌵 Nature 🧠 Human psychology 🏫 Learning and development 🦹♀️ Murder mystery/crime 🧘♀️ Health and wellbeing 🧁 General homesteading activities/knowledge Bonus question:- What activities do you do when listening to podcasts? I get so distracted, the only one I've ever been able to master is washing the pots... otherwise I sit listening, and then end up asleep 💤 #podcastrecommendations #unpopularopinion #podcasts

At the beginning of 2024, I said I wanted to go all in on podcasting! So, how's that going? Well, I've managed to keep up one podcast that I personally started in 2017. And I have a podcast shoot today for a show that my team will be continuing for a second season to coincide with the Toastmasters year, which is ending this month. It's also the fiscal end of the year for business peeps, or the end of Quarter 4. We have two shoots left for the season, and one might transition from Season 1 to Season 2 as a recap episode. I want to have a natural conversation for that. I also signed up for a 3-day event called "The Game Has Changed," featuring speakers like Tony Robbins and Dean Graziosi. Unfortunately, I'll have to catch the replay because it's at the same time as the shoot. No biggie, no problem. I've also managed to keep up my personal podcast, "Keeping It Reel," which is in its first season. I've consistently posted at least one or two episodes this year, even though I used to go a long time without uploading anything. Today, I'm speaking into the microphone and converting my words into text form to make this post. You can make content in a lot of ways, like making a podcast, shooting an hour-long clip, and then chopping it up to give you a week or two worth of content to post and share. I'm looking to do more of that in the second season of the podcast I mentioned earlier, "D50 After Dark." So, check it out, both of my podcasts are on Spotify, Apple, and numerous other places wherever you like to listen to podcasts. Go check them out. My personal podcast is also on iHeartRadio, and I still don't know how I got on there, but iHeartRadio just indexed me, and I'm on there. So, go check it out, give me a listen, and leave me a review on either "Keeping It Reel" or "D50 After Dark." Let me know what you want to hear from me. #podcast #podcastersoflinkedin #podcastlife Mickey Bennett Roy Martinez Habitat Commons Helen Williams Jerry Baskett David Dunn James Harris, Jr. Aletta Rochat Kristy Pedersen Elyssa Schneider Akash Navneeth

I just came across some interesting insights about podcast listeners that I wanted to share. Did you know that nearly 70% of Americans aged 12 and up have listened to podcasts? According to Edison Research, about 47% of them tune in at least once a month! Here’s how it breaks down by age: - 29% of kids age 6–12 - 59% of people age 12–34 - 55% of people age 35–54 - 27% of those aged 55 and older It’s amazing to see how podcasts are connecting with such a wide range of age groups! If you're curious about what this means for the future of podcasting, check out this blog I found: https://loom.ly/of1Sil4 What are your thoughts on the future of podcasts? #Podcasting #FutureOfPodcasting #PodcastCommunity #PodcastTrends
