Malcolm Fleming, New Zealand Certified Builders Association Chief Executive, says vocational training needs to embrace not just the delivery of technical skills but the deeper education necessary to create successful business people. New Zealand’s vocational education system has been through a series of upheavals in recent years, and more change is on the way. Minister Simmonds has put forward some major proposals focusing on core qualifications, how they are delivered and who creates the content and administers the delivery. **PRESS RELEASE** The General Presidents' Maintenance Committee for Canada and National Maintenance Council for Canada (GPMC | NMC) announced today that their bursary applications are open. The GPMC | NMC offers bursaries totaling $50,000 to assist members of Canada’s Building Trade Unions children with the cost of their post-secondary education. A total of 25 bursaries will be allocated across Canada, including 15 bursaries for Western Canada and 10 for Eastern Canada. “The GPMC | NMC understands that bursaries make a positive and lasting impact on students today and in the future. We recognize the importance of providing the next generation of leaders in our communities the education and skills required for success”, said Brett McKenzie, GPMC | NMC Executive Director. To qualify, applicants must be attending a post-secondary academic institution on a full-time basis. Their parents must be a member of one of Canada’s Construction and Building Trades Unions where their local union has within its jurisdiction a General Presidents’ Maintenance Agreement (GPMA) and/or National Maintenance Agreement (NMA). The GPMC | NMC has been a leader in unionized maintenance since 1952. Deadline for submissions is November 30, 2024. WEDNESDAY WHO’S WHO   The year 1981 for our Year 10 students at CBC was marked with a blend of social events, outdoor activities, and an expanded curriculum that introduced practical trade skills and essential life skills. Highlights were noted as the barbecue with St. Ann's and the Year 10 Walk along the coast to Childers Cove. However perhaps the most significant was the continued broadening of the Year 10 curriculum to engage students in subjects and careers to include practical trade training. Through a collaboration with Warrnambool Technical College, students were given opportunities to gain hands-on experience in various trades, including building construction, motor maintenance, plumbing, welding and typing. With the curriculum recognising the importance of practical life skills, students also gained access to pre-driver training.  These courses aimed to prepare students for real-world responsibilities, enhancing their independence and readiness for adulthood.   Who are the familiar faces you can find among Year 10 Red, now the Class of 1983? #wednesdaywhoswho #emmanuelalumni #connectedasone

I remember the old fire precautions workplace regulations school assessments, the roll out of the fire safety order in 2005/6 and the confusion and concerns with school Head teachers becoming the responsible person with the 39 “must ” duties aligned to the RP Duty. Fast forward nearly 20 years schools in general have far better fire safety management and controls with better levels of fire detection, better training and increased physical protection with fire doors/protected routes. Themed findings from School Fire Risk Assessments include issues with cooker hood cleaning schedule and TR19 cooker hood extraction service, still some issues with excessive coats/bag/displays in corridors/means of escape, lack of local fire door inspections, stage 2 action plans outstanding, lack of lettings fire induction and agreed maximum numbers. Also the lack of fire safety information for the fire and rescue service on emergency call out re: site plan/hazards/asbestos/gas cylinders/radiation

Ofsted have published their findings of the big ask survey with a pledge of commitments to providers in the FE sector. Ofsted plans to remove single-word judgments for overall effectiveness for FE and skills inspections and replace them with a report card in the future - a change that is welcomed by providers in the sector. Other welcomed news is that inspectors due to inspect in FE having training in this area to ensure greater understanding of the areas and how these may differ from other school settings. Committing to another set of consultations with the sector to reform the inspection framework for FE and skills to better tailor the inspections to the diverse range of provision in the sector. Ensuring the framework works well for classroom-focused qualifications as well as employer-led vocational and technical training providers. Ofsted will also introduce a 5-day notice period for colleges and large or complex FE and skills providers. They will aim to consult with the sector to make sure that our other notice periods and the size of the inspection teams are proportionate to the size and complexity of all those we inspect. https://lnkd.in/eafFfp4y
