Hello from Austin, Texas! I am visiting to consider opening a factory here to build my drones. The cost of outsourcing production in America is becoming increasingly uncompetitive, with taxes, labor costs, and the cost of land rising. Based on discussions with the factory I work with, it would cost 15 times the price of producing in China to produce my drones in the United States. I aim to challenge Chinese drone maker DJI with a drone made for Americans by Americans. To lower production costs in America, I am considering establishing my own factory instead of outsourcing to automate and control the entire production process. Low taxes, abundant cheap land, and business optimism with large companies like Tesla relocating to Texas have made Texas a very appealing option. So far, the city seems very vibrant. Many skyscrapers are under construction.

This is not a post about bikes! It's about a great example of lateral thinking and how a company transfered their skills to an emerging new market. Okay, it does feature a bike but that's how I discovered the story. DJI are well known for their drones, cameras and gimbals being a market leader in the sector, but a mountain bike is not the next product you would have expected them to bring to market. They used some great lateral thinking to identify an opportunity in the growing market of electric mountain bikes (eMTBs) and knew their core technologies and expertise around brushless motors, batteries and displays/controls gives them the perfect skillset to produce eMTB powertrains. They've brought the motor to market under the well known DJI brand (which will be available to other bike manufacturers) and created a standalone bike brand Amflow for their own bikes. I love to see this innovative approach to product development where businesses look beyond their core markets for opportunities to diversify. #ProductDesign #CreativeThinking

Hey Tom I like your thinking and ambition. It would be helpful to read a book "Playing to Win" by ex P&G CEO A.G. Lafley and Roger Martin of Rotman SOMgmt This is about how strategy really works and is used at Farmer School of Business - Miami University - Oxford. "A drone for Americans by Americans" is not enough for a strategy. The American consumer, Walmart and US automakers walked away from this strategy years ago when Japan, namely Toyota using Deming's (an American's) principles to build a much higher quality car. You have several options Tesla is still in America because of robotics to lower their cost (and they are still very expensive) but robots are in the long run much cheaper for assembly processes. Another avenue to explore might be Mexico because of NAFTA their should be no import fee and the labor is cheaper. US car cos. and VW and BMW builds cars in Mexico to sell in the US. It would be still built by Americans for Americans. But more important you need to define your value proposition - what is your Point of Difference (POD) and are your target customers willing to pay for that POD relative to your competition.
