Encouraging basic practices like handwashing can curb the spread of waterborne diseases and uplift public health standards. To address these challenges, collaboration is key. Let's unite efforts, innovate solutions, and advocate for policy reforms to ensure equitable access to WASH services across Africa. Periodic assessment of WASH systems is essential for understanding strengths, identifying gaps, and benchmarking performance. These assessments inform targeted interventions, allowing us to focus on critical areas that can accelerate impact. When we fail to periodically assess the WASH building blocks, it may seem like progress is being made, but in reality, no significant results will be achieved. Today is #WorldWaterDay An estimated 1.8 million people needed lifesaving access to water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH) services in crises affected regions in Cameroon, in 2023. By the end of December 2023, only 954,000 vulnerable people benefited from improved access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. (OCHA Cameroon - March 2024) Access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, and hygiene promotion are essential to prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea, and to prevent malnutrition. Improving access to water, hygiene and sanitation also contribute to protect the dignity and well-being of the affected populations and reduce the risk of gender-based violence. Moreover, by working together to balance everyone’s human rights and needs, water can be a stabilizing force and a catalyst for sustainable development. Unfortunately, the #WASH response in Cameroon remains largely underfunded and constrained by insecurity and access challenges. More resources and support are needed to ensure that affected populations receive timely and adequate WASH assistance.

#Benin, a West African country, is implementing #WASH initiatives to improve #publichealth, access to #cleanwater, and #sanitation services. The country has implemented Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) programs, #empowering communities to improve #sanitation practices. Over 1,500 #communities have been declared open #defecation-free zones, promoting sustainable practices. Over 80% of the #rural population now has access to improved #watersources. Benin has also prioritized WASH programs in #schools, promoting #handwashing practices and sanitation #education. Today is United Nations #WorldWaterDay, and in #Malawi, access to #water remains a challenge. One in three people do not have access to clean water, and more than 3,100 children under five die every year from diarrhea caused by dirty water and poor #sanitation. For Martin Meke of the Malawi team, “it is essential to highlight the remarkable strides that Malawi has taken in ensuring access to clean water and improved sanitation” through the recent establishment of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation. The new ministry shows the country’s commitment to addressing water-related challenges and transforming the lives of Malawians. PROPEL Health, alongside other stakeholders, has been supporting the new ministry’s functional review process, and continues to engage the ministry to explore #WASH-related policy gaps. The creation of the ministry is a step in the right direction in Malawi and can turn the tide toward clean water and sanitation for all in Malawi.
