“The edition of Exercise Mare Aperto (MA24) which started today, constitutes the largest training event ever organized by the Italian Navy. There will be four intense weeks in which over 9,000 men and women will be confronted with a simulated crisis scenario which will progressively lead to a situation of open confrontation. The forces will be organized into opposing parties that will operate in all the different environments of the maritime domain, from the high seas, including the seabed, to the coastal and littoral areas. The other domains, air, land, space and cyber, will naturally also be intensely involved, in a fully multi-domain manner and with an approach that will be joint, inter-agency and inter-ministerial at the same time,” Admiral Aurelio De Carolis, Commander in Chief Naval Fleet.

DragonFire, the groundbreaking laser weapon developed by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), has completed successful testing, marking a significant milestone in military technology. Capable of neutralizing drones with unparalleled precision, DragonFire offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional missiles. The recent tests, conducted in January at the Herbrides Range in Scotland, demonstrated the weapon's remarkable accuracy by striking a £1 coin from a kilometer away. Following the triumph of these tests, DragonFire is now poised for full-scale production, with plans underway to integrate the system onto Royal Navy ships within the next five years. This advancement heralds a new era in naval warfare, where laser-directed energy weapons provide instantaneous engagement and inflict structural damage on targets, offering heightened effectiveness compared to conventional armaments. #Auroxatech #DragonFire #UKMoD #laserweapon #navaltechnology #militaryinnovation #RoyalNavy #HerbridesRange #dronecountermeasure #precisionstrike

https://lnkd.in/di2epMTh The Drone Threat and the Security Of the Red and Black Seas by Kit Perry 11 Jun 2024 Uncrewed Aerial Systems: (UAVs) and Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) challenge the ability of naval fleets to establish and maintain control in the Red and Black Seas narrow theatres. The essay looks at events in the Red and Black Seas to test its argument. These theatres capture the wider security-warfare continuum, and offer remarkable parallels in how Ukrainian forces are challenging the Russian Navy in the latter, and the Houthi forces are pressuring the multi-national naval task forces in the former. Both conflicts showcase the use of low cost, uncrewed systems to strike at naval fleets and disrupt maritime shipping; and both conflicts are set in narrow seas where one side commands a superior naval force, and the other, lacking a navy, employs an asymmetric force to limit their adversary’s use of the sea. There are, however, subtle but key differences between these two scenarios regarding how each side has implemented uncrewed technology, and lessons can be drawn from both.

Today’s armed forces often only have moments in which to make decisions and quickly take the decisive steps that a mission requires. Thus, forces need an identification capability to identify whether aircraft, vessels or other platforms are friendly or not. This also counts for the maritime domain. Consequently, whether deployed at sea or in land-based training facilities, your forces need to interface with combat management systems with full IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) capability. With our Compact Naval IFF System (CNIS), HENSOLDT offers a fully certified and combat proven NATO Mode 5 IFF solution of small equipment footprint and cost-effective, ideally suited for small naval platforms, where space for essential mission equipment is at a premium. Centred on our MSSR 2000 ID interrogator and the LTR 400 D transponder, the CNIS offers straight forward platform integration via naval standard interfaces. If you want to learn more about our naval IFF technologies, visit us in Paris at EURONAVAL from 4-7 November.
