The European Union has just adopted Council Conclusions on cardiovascular health, marking a pivotal step towards safeguarding the well-being of 440 million Europeans. 👉 Why does this matter? European Council Conclusions identify issues of concern for the EU and propose actions to address them. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the continent, affecting over 60 million people, claiming almost 2 million lives every year, and costing €282 billion annually. The Council is calling on European Member States to: 🔴 Expand screening programs to detect cardiovascular risk factors 🔴 Address social and environmental determinants of health 🔴 Improve access to tailored therapies Proposed steps include promoting evidence-based prevention measures, advancing innovative treatments, and leveraging digital health tools for better data integration and research. The newly appointed Health Commissioner, Olivér Várhelyi, has committed to transforming these Council Conlusions into a comprehensive European Cardiovascular Health Plan. The European Alliance for Cardiovascular Health (EACH), of which the World Heart Federation is a partner, applauds this milestone and remains committed to supporting policies that prioritize cardiovascular health. The European Commission has responded to two questions tabled by European Heart Failure Mission Policy Champions Demetris Papadakis MEP and Barry Andrews MEP regarding EU funding for heart failure. The response highlights existing funding programmes aimed at broader cardiovascular issues. However, it is imperative that future funding, such as Horizon Europe and EU4Health initiatives, explicitly includes heart failure to ensure sustained progress in tackling the syndrome. The Commission’s response also underscores the urgent need for EU institutions to acknowledge the substantial impact heart failure has on health systems and on people living with it. Proactively addressing heart failure, as outlined in the European Heart Failure Mission statement, not only enhances the quality of life of those living with heart failure, but also helps tackle health system sustainability issues. We will continue to work closely with the Policy Champions and the incoming EU administration to advocate for making heart failure a policy priority in Europe. https://lnkd.in/etsnVw3p

QUT Health researchers, including childhood respiratory disease expert QUT Professor Anne Chang and The Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation (AusHSI), have called for and developed a framework for global efforts to address the drivers of chronic respiratory disease (CRD). The review, published in Lancet Respiratory Medicine, highlights the significantly higher burden of CRD in the world's Indigenous populations, identifying the risk of respiratory-related hospitalisations for Australia’s Indigenous People to be 2.4 times higher than non-Indigenous. Prof. Chang noted the importance of the strategies for all people, but underscored that implementation of the framework is "more pressing for Indigenous People who have a high prevalence of risk factors for CRD including low birthweight, prematurity, poor nutrition, air pollution, and a high burden of infections and poverty” Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/4dGwOs2 (Main Image: Getty Images Credit: martin-dm. Heart failure costs European health systems over €280 billion a year – and that number is predicted to increase in the next decade. Heart failure can have a significant impact on people’s lives, affecting their ability to work, travel and socialise. As the leading cause of preventable hospitalisations in Europe, the condition must be tackled to ensure better health outcomes and secure the long-term economic stability of the EU. This will require coordinated policy action and investment from policymakers to support regional and national efforts to deliver best-practice heart failure care. https://lnkd.in/eKnYzT49

Women in focus: Focus on heart health ❤️ and identify cardiovascular risk early 🔍 As part of my Austrian tour 🇦🇹 on women's health, I had a very insightful conversation today with Beate Scheiber, health spokesperson in the Tyrolean state parliament. Our meeting focused on the important topic of cardiovascular disease in women 👩⚕️. Women are often at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and it is crucial to be aware of your own cholesterol levels. Beate Scheiber emphasized the need for an incentive system to motivate people to get regular check-ups 🩺. The free preventive medical examination is the ideal tool for identifying risks early and taking preventive measures. By raising awareness of these issues, we can make a significant contribution to improving women's health. I look forward to working with committed partners 🤝 like Beate Scheiber to further raise awareness of women's health and implement concrete measures. #WomenHealth #CardioVascularDiseases #ASCVD #HealthPolicy #ReimaginingMedicine Prof. Dr. Ludwig Sabine, MSc., MA Cornelia Hagele Viktoria Kapferer Agnes Schöchl Daniela Gutschi Maria Rauch-Kallat Naghme Dr.Kamaleyan-Schmied Michael S.
