I am very honored but what a great opportunity to congratulate my partners at LRMM who were also nominated and why not, to take this opportunity to try and help our great and upcoming lawyers and in particular, the women in the profession… Indeed, on September 13, 2024, I had the opportunity to attend the Gender Diversity in the M&A Ecosystem panel as part of the Women in M&A Subcommittee Meeting at the ABA Business Fall Meeting. The co-chairs of this panel were: Joanna Lin (McDermott) and Charlotte May (Covington). The participants were: Vice Chancellor Morgan Zurn (Delaware Chancery Court) Kristin Zimmerman (Morgan Stanley) Justine Chiou (William Blair) Disha Mehta (Houlihan Lokey) Jennifer Muller (Houlihan Lokey) Sandra Zhao The meeting sparked a great deal of reflection among the participants as they shared their insights and experiences throughout their respective careers. So, I chimed in and shared the following in the hopes I could also give some important advice I picked-up throughout my 30 years of practice: 1. Plan your career: don’t wing it. 2. Seek advice from others but adapt it to your style. 3. Work hard but don’t just do the work, bring great ideas to the table and make them happen. 4. Walk the talk and look the part. 5. Forget what people think but don’t forget what they tell you. LLA: listen, lay back, and answer later to make change happen. 6. Be bold. A “no” today from a prospective client could become a “maybe” later or even a “yes”. 7. Focus on a list of clients, get organized and follow through systematically. Consistency is key. One day at a time, one month at a time, one year at a time… 8. Mentorship is nice to benefit from and very helpful but: sponsorship is crucial. Sponsor other women! 9. Children do not slow you down, they pace you and propel you forward. 10. The mind rules the body: don’t think it is hard, think it is a chance as every situation has a positive side; don’t wait for praise; praise others and yourself. 11. Men don’t see us differently even if we are and we don’t need to justify our choices, our realities or our lives. **************
