November is Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to promote awareness and provide essential resources for managing diabetes. For Centers for Independent Living (CILs) serving people with disabilities, it’s important to share accessible information on diabetes prevention, self-management, and care. CILs can connect people to the Maryland Department of Health’s Diabetes Resources or your local or county departments of health, which offer programs to teach skills like monitoring blood sugar, healthy eating, and stress management. By sharing these resources, CILs can help improve health outcomes for people with disabilities and empower individuals to take control of their diabetes management. **"World Diabetes Day 2024: Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps in Diabetes Care"** On this World Diabetes Day, I want to take a moment to acknowledge those living with diabetes—we see you Today, I’m once again reminded of how essential our work as Orthotists and Prosthetists is to those living with diabetes. This year’s theme, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,” speaks to the heart of what we strive to do—making quality care more accessible and reducing the obstacles that people with diabetes face every day. In my role, I often work with patients managing complications that impact mobility and overall quality of life. From creating custom orthotics for foot health to supporting those who’ve experienced limb loss, it’s clear that our work goes beyond the clinical—it’s about empowering each individual to live with independence and dignity. Today, I’m rededicating myself to this mission and to the simple yet powerful goal of helping those with diabetes feel supported and cared for. It’s a commitment that inspires me each day to listen, learn, and always strive to improve access and quality of care.
