It's been a good week for pharmacy education. With the Wales CPD strategy consultation coming to a close and attending the Clinical Pharmacy Congress to build networks and learn about how we can support the pharmacy workforce whilst sharing learnings across sectors. With so much going on the key questions continue to move around how we can all implement workforce change in highly pressured systems. It's good to see the will to make the future of pharmacy a success is ever present. #CPCongress #pharmacydevelopment #communitypharmacy

In our last (but not least) week of #AmericanPharmacistMonth coverage, we're shining the light on specialty pharmacists. Chelsee Jensen, PharmD, BCPS, is a senior #pharmacy specialist at the Mayo Clinic. Before she became a #pharmacist, Jensen wanted to become a nurse. However, after helping her grandmother organize and stay on track with various #medications, she decided to pursue a #career in pharmacy. In a conversation with Drug Topics, Jensen discussed some of the #rewards and #challenges she faces in her setting, a specific program she implemented that exemplifies the value of pharmacists in #patient care, what the biggest opportunities are for pharmacists to expand their role in patient care in today's health care landscape, and how #biosimilars will impact the pharmacy profession in the coming years. Hospitals should hire clinical pharmacists because they significantly reduce medication errors✅. In health systems that do not hire them, medication errors are not recognized and reported very well. ✅Please take a look at this study's results in the picture (The number of clinical pharmacists/100 occupied hospital beds AND medication errors/occupied bed/Year). More pharmacists mean fewer errors! 2-3 pharmacists/100 beds is fine! ✅The results are clear. Check this excellent paper: Pharmacotherapy 2002, 22, 134-147. https://lnkd.in/eMR84yqb ✅Remember: 1081 US hospitals were included! As I sit down today to study for the (hopefully) last MPJE I will ever take, I realize that clinical pharmacists are woefully underprepared for this test. I rely heavily on my community/retail knowledge and my experiences in long term care pharmacy to prepare for the test. The amount of clinical knowledge that I need is shockingly low. Perhaps that is why pharmacists struggle with the MPJE? You really need to have concrete knowledge of how community pharmacy works in your state. An unrealized upside to community practice.
