Understanding the milestones in climate agreements is crucial for every sector, but it has specific implications for the aviation industry, which is both a significant contributor to and a stakeholder in global sustainability efforts. The Kyoto Protocol set the stage by recognizing the need for developed nations to lead emission reductions, paving the way for the industry to start considering how to reduce its carbon footprint. The Paris Agreement, with its more inclusive and flexible framework, asks all nations—and by extension, all industries—to commit to emission reductions. For aviation, this means innovation in fuel efficiency, operational procedures, and carbon offsetting must be accelerated. These agreements underscore the urgent need for the aviation sector to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to the global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
