It was great meeting an industry mentor yesterday. Mark Halpern CFP, TEP, MFA-P has been an insurance advisor for 33 years. His specialty is tax exempt life insurance used for philanthropy. Mark was in town from Toronto at the Morgan Creek Golf Club for a Peace Arch Hospital Foundation Partners in Planning event. He has a saying that goes: “There are two kinds of people; those who care and those who don’t. People who care about other people buy life insurance.” It’s an interesting question to ask oneself, if you could donate one million dollars to charity — which charity would it be? He spoke a lot about how we all have three potential beneficiaries when we die and we can only pick two. Family, Goverment, or Charity. Further describing how proper planning can efficiently transform taxes into charitable giving. Who wouldn’t rather support causes they care about through legacy giving versus lining the pockets of the government with extra taxes, it’s a no brainer. I could tell he’s done his presentation too many times to count because his natural use of humor and story telling were effortless. It’s really inspiring for me to hold a vision for myself as a professional who can help impact-driven people and organizations give back to two specific causes close to my heart — Animals and our environment. Taking action on some simple estate planning decisions can have a massive impact on a brighter future. I choose my beneficiaries as family and charity, what about you? My hips have just about recovered from the ‘Insure Trek 2024 Team Trek’ across the Pyrenees Freedom Trail. We have so far raised over £100,000 for the Alzheimer's Society as part of the Insurance United Against Dementia campaign! . In 2018, I joined Peter Blanc ACII and what we later referred to as the “Mont Blanc Massive” (a eclectic group of insurance reprobates :)), and we hiked around Mont Blanc to raise money for dementia. So, when the offer came through again, I couldn’t really refuse (well I could, but saying no has never been a strong point :)) It appears that the insurance industry has enough reprobates to form a equally eclectic group for a second charity hike. A fact which created much laughter and joy on the walk. I spent most of the hike towards the back of the group, but found others bounced around enough that I had the pleasure of pretty much everyone’s company at different points during the day. And if not, we made up for it in the evenings. It never ceases to amaze me, how a group of people, who on the surface have so little in common, can become so close when sharing a common goal and overcoming a collective challenge. The fact that I also got to share the experience with two of our team Joshua Mitchell and Luke Mayor made it even better! We are horrifically busy at work right now, and I think it’s fair to say we all questioned whether going on the trek was the right thing to do at that time. But, I’m so glad we did! You cannot replace the value these kinds of experiences have in strengthening bonds. Strong bonds are also vital when tackling work challenges. So, as I head into another big week at work, I’m feeling very grateful for the laughs, the connection, the absolute magnificence of the mountains and the collective achievement of a group of mostly strangers… that can now call each other friends. #thehardiswhatmakesitgreat #sharedgoals #charity #teamwork #dementia
