How can cities combat climate risks, foster biodiversity, and promote well-being while ensuring financial feasibility? The Islington Council and our team are paving the way—quite literally—by converting unused dead end streets into vibrant “pocket parks.” Through a groundbreaking blended financing framework, this initiative is more than just urban greening; it's a model for sustainable, community-focused urban transformation. With 10 parks underway and over 250 potential sites identified, the project demonstrates how public-private partnerships can deliver measurable social, environmental, and economic benefits. 💡 Did you know? These parks help mitigate urban heat islands, reduce stormwater runoff, and even lower healthcare costs—all while fostering a sense of community. Thamesmead’s extraordinary landscape offers huge opportunities to improve health and wellbeing, increase biodiversity and mitigate the effects of climate change. We’ve been making the most of those opportunities across the town in recent years, thanks to our work with partners and communities. Together we’re reinvigorating and caring for a wealth of blue and green spaces, so people and nature can flourish. This work is part of our wider long-term plan to improve, grow and look after the town. We’ve a strong story to tell, which is why today we’re launching A Greener Thamesmead: The Story So Far. Inside you’ll find: • Our approach to landscape-led regeneration, focusing on our green infrastructure framework, Living in the Landscape • A timeline and links to key projects and programmes in different neighbourhoods • Facts and figures on our investment and impact • Reflections on what we’re achieving and learning, and a look to the future • Photos of reinvigorated spaces • A range of case studies. Proud to have contributed to Climate and Community Project 's Case for a Green New Deal for Public Housing: https://lnkd.in/eiVfhkBj We cannot tax credit our way to sustainability. At the same time, housing is the largest carbon emitter, and conditions for low-income households are worsening in and outside of public housing. Taking advantage of scale to find and spread innovation is the only way to save our planet and lives. We run a real risk of having sustainable living be just a luxury. The Green New Deal for Public Housing is a serious plan to deal with our housing affordability, quality crises, and lower emissions. https://lnkd.in/eTAGUzg7

How is equity ensured in green infrastructure? How do we make sure that continues? 🌿🌳 As urban areas continue to grow, it's essential to prioritize **social equity** alongside **green infrastructure**. A sustainable city is not just about parks and clean air; it's about ensuring that all communities have access to these vital resources. Imagine living in a neighborhood where vibrant green spaces are just a short walk away, where everyone—regardless of their background—can enjoy fresh air, safe parks, and community gardens. 🌿✨ We need to advocate for policies that ensure equitable access to these green spaces, promote community involvement in urban planning, and support initiatives that prioritize sustainability for all. Together, we can create cities that are not only beautiful but also just and inclusive. 🏗️🛣️ Read up on the reasons, strategies, and case studies behind equitable green infrastructure on our blog post: https://hubs.ly/Q02Ppxsj0 #SocialEquity #GreenInfrastructure #UrbanJustice #SustainableCities #EquitableAccess #CommunityWellbeing #GreenSpacesForAll #ClimateJustice #UrbanPlanning #InclusiveCities

Building Sustainable Communities: A Vision for Tomorrow Sustainable communities are more than just urban developments; they represent a harmonious fusion of human needs, environmental preservation, and social equity. Urban planning serves as the cornerstone in shaping these communities, focusing not only on physical infrastructure but also on fostering connectivity, diversity, and well-being. Central to sustainable communities is the promotion of alternative modes of transportation, such as walking, cycling, and public transit, to reduce carbon emissions and enhance residents' quality of life. Yet, sustainability transcends infrastructure, encompassing access to affordable housing, education, healthcare, and green spaces for all. Achieving sustainable communities demands collaboration across sectors, innovative policies, and grassroots initiatives prioritizing long-term sustainability and social justice. By reimagining traditional development paradigms and embracing innovative approaches, we can pave the way for resilient, equitable, and prosperous communities—today and for future generations. #SustainableCommunities #UrbanPlanning #GreenInfrastructure #CommunityWellbeing #EquitableDevelopment #ClimateAction #CommunityEngagement #ResilientCommunities #GreenTransportation #AffordableHousing #EducationForAll #HealthcareAccess #GreenSpaces #SocialJustice #InnovationInUrbanPlanning #FutureCities

** Urban Greening ** BRM Advisory recently assisted Resilient East to prepare a submission on the draft Urban Greening Strategy developed by Green Adelaide. Through the submission, Resilient East wanted to emphasise how much progress has been made in recent years around urban greening, as well the extent of work ahead of us if we are to realise the shared ambition of a greener, cooler and more biodiverse region. Our submission noted - the limitations of relying on voluntary measures - the importance of planning for practical things like water supply, the capacity of the nursery industry and tree valuation methodologies; and - the need for a clearer implementation and funding strategy to help translate good intent into action. Urban greening is one of those strategic opportunities that will only be fully realised by action being driven by different organisations within their scope of influence. The Urban Greening Strategy represents a positive step forward to help stakeholders align around a shared purpose. #UrbanGreening #BRMAdvisory Karla Billington
