In our most recent distributed work survey, we asked employees whether they’d be interested in doing an international assignment. What we found was that there were significant levels of interest in both short- and long-term assignments, with 44% of workers saying they’d consider a long-term international assignment and 41% saying they’d be interested in a short-term assignment abroad. With employee demand high, it’s clear to see that companies that are able to provide opportunities for extended periods of international work are likely to have an edge when it comes to talent retention and acquisition. This is so critical at a time of growing skills shortages - a topic I discussed just last week in our webinar with Karoli Hindriks from Jobbatical. As a whole host of countries face major skills gaps, recruiting and keeping the best talent is going to rise up the corporate agenda - and these stats show the important part global mobility can play in helping meet employee expectations. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒓: From working with many UK businesses growing their service teams into Europe, there has been a lot I have learnt about the differences across the different markets. When looking to grow into Europe, there are a lot of factors that many haven’t thought about that I consider to be essential. A few to note include: Higher Salaries – Many European countries have higher salary expectations than the UK, which can impact budgeting and alignment with your existing team. Travel Costs – With expansion comes increased travel, whether for team collaboration or market development. Getting someone in who’s comfortable with that is essential. Increased Notice Period – Often in Europe, candidate’s notice periods are typically 3 months or longer which can impact a business’ time to hire.
