Using Dragonette hyperspectral imagery, the ratio between chlorophyll and carotenoids can be measured with a calculated value called the Plant Senescence Reflectance Index (PSRI). When a plant is stressed or maturing (senescence), there will be a higher amount of carotenoids in its leaves. In this image captured over Hokkaido in late September, PSRI highlights rice paddies that are ready for harvesting. The light green fields in the natural color image represent rice paddies nearing harvest. In the PSRI image, these rice paddies present as purple and orange, with the orange areas having a higher carotenoid content. Many of the fields have already been cleared, which present as bright yellow. Other types of vegetation (trees or other crops not ready for harvest) present as black. Dragonette hyperspectral imagery helps identify optimal harvest time by measuring the compounds present within the leaves of a plant, as well as assessing the need for fertilizers and pesticides during growth. In addition, this imagery can be used to monitor large areas of agricultural land to better understand farming practices, crop yields, and land use. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

Monday #AgronomicNews 🌱 By now, winter crops are sown, and grain corn is harvested, giving farmers a moment to recover from a challenging year. Here are the three key points we discussed this morning: 🫛 Pea crops: High humidity left over 60% of pea fields unharvestable. While essential for nitrogen fixation, many farmers plan to reduce or abandon this crop due to repeated failures and economic challenges. Source: terre-net.com 🌽 Maize: When well-managed, maize proves valuable, producing high biomass in six months, supporting cover crops, and regulating summer temperatures. 🚜 Companion cropping for maize: Sowing companion crops at the end of the maize cycle, as light reaches the ground, aligns with autumn mineralisation. But challenges remain: species selection, competition, weather, sowing methods, and weed control. Thanks to our agronomists, especially Maxime Alaurent for these insights! Stay tuned for more agronomic updates! 🌱 #RegenAg #SoilCapital #AgroNews

Our Soil & Crop Nutrition Agronomist, Sajjad Awan, calls soil organic matter (SOM) a silver bullet. He also says that if we manage to add 2% organic matter in textured soil, it can provide 4 additional days of water for crop transpiration during peak summer days. These 4 days mean half a tonne of additional yield! *Do Corn Tillers (Suckers) Help or Hurt Yields?* Farming Chronicles Unveiled Corn tillers, also known as suckers, have sparked debate among farmers for nearly a century. Unlike wheat and small grains, where tillering is beneficial, corn tillers' impact on yields was uncertain. *Cause of Tillers* Tillers form at lower nodes due to: 1. Genetic makeup of the hybrid 2. Soil fertility 3. Early-season growing conditions 4. Plant population and spacing *Effects on Yields* Research from the 1930s revealed: 1. Removing tillers doesn't increase yields and often reduces them. 2. Tillers contribute to grain production, especially in low-density stands. 3. Tillers support main plant growth through nutrient sharing. *Conditions Where Tillers Might Hurt Yields* 1. Exceptional drought after favorable spring conditions, leading to excessive transpiration. 2. Low plant populations, potentially depleting water resources. *Key Takeaways* 1. Tillers rarely harm yields under normal conditions. 2. Check stand density and distribution before blaming the hybrid. 3. Tillers can increase yields in low-density stands. *Best Practices* 1. Optimize plant population and spacing. 2. Maintain soil fertility and moisture. 3. Choose hybrids with beneficial tillering traits. 4. Monitor weather conditions to mitigate potential yield impacts. ### 1. **Cover Cropping** - **Planting Cover Crops**: Growing cover crops (such as clover, rye, and vetch) during off-seasons helps prevent soil erosion, improve soil structure, and enhance organic matter content. - **Nutrient Fixation**: Leguminous cover crops can fix atmospheric nitrogen, enriching the soil for subsequent crops.

The onion market is a dynamic and exciting field. As I've mentioned before, understanding market preferences is crucial for successful farming. Market preferences vary -Color: Deep red or pale onions are in demand. - Size: Some buyers prefer large, medium, or small onions. -Pungency: Stronger, more pungent onions are desired by certain consumers. -Shape: Oval or round onions are popular choices. Know your market, know what to farm. #MondayMarketDay
