To say I was surprised to be named a finalist in the Suffolk Care Awards’ Care Ambassador category is an understatement. It was overwhelming, with a hint of that “imposter syndrome” creeping in. But reflecting on 45 years in and around the NHS, health, and social care, I realise just how much knowledge I’ve gathered which I hope I use to the benefit of others. From acute hospitals and care homes to working with local authorities, delivering training to managers, working in a single handed GP Practice (yes they did exist) to earning a Diploma in Health Emergency Planning, working on a national project for the Department of Health across England, Wales, and Scotland – it’s been quite a journey. Does all this make me an expert? Maybe. What it has given me are strong opinions on how to improve quality in the care sector. When I started my care agency in 2013, my goal was to address many of the negatives/concerns the press and consecutive governments have consistently highlighted. I decided I could only do that in one way. I wanted to prove that a care company could address some of the negatives. And, for 11 years now, we’ve done just that – consistently growing by word of mouth. I could not have followed this dream without my lovely daughter Nicola (in the picture) who gets my passion and has supported our business through this whole journey. Our focus? Always on what makes things better for our clients and our care team. It might sound simple, but if politics were taken out of the equation and that focus applied nationwide, the solutions are right in front of us. Is it easy being a fairly lone voice in the care sector? No. Would it be easy to make national changes? No. But as a very wise person once said, “You have to start somewhere.” I am very grateful to the member of my care team who nominated me, has shaken me out of a comfort zone and reminded me to keep shouting. If anyone at a higher level is reading this, I’d be happy to share my thoughts #caresector #careathome #Suffolk #careawards #suffolkcareawards #dreamteam

Respect Adds Value to Care Work 🌟 In the fast-paced world of healthcare, the importance of respect cannot be overstated. By genuinely valuing our care staff, we contribute to a more compassionate and efficient work environment. This respect is reflected not only in the way we communicate but also in the support we provide to our teams. At Newton Healthcare, we believe respect is foundational. It's not simply about polite interactions; it involves listening, acknowledging contributions and providing consistent, honest feedback. When healthcare professionals feel respected, their motivation and overall job satisfaction soar. This naturally results in better care for patients. Our commitment to honesty, courage, and inclusion shapes our approach. We ensure that every healthcare assistant, nurse, and support worker we place is treated with the kindness and dignity they deserve. After all, creating a respectful workplace is not just beneficial for staff—it's essential for delivering top-notch care. Let's make a pledge: to treat our care staff with the respect they earn every day. https://lnkd.in/exXZbfka #RespectInHealthcare #HealthcareRecruitment #ValueYourStaff

👏 Absolutely spot on! I couldn’t agree more with this post Elly Patt. Talking openly about our health and social care challenges is crucial for growth and progress. The hurdles we overcome in proving why we are the best providers aren’t just obstacles - they’re opportunities to demonstrate our commitment, our expertise, and, most importantly, the life-changing impact we have on the people we support. At Nurseline Community Services, we thrive on building that trust with local authorities, Integrated Care Boards, and the wider community. It’s not just about offering a service; it’s about being part of someone’s journey toward independence and well-being. The stories we share, the experiences we bring forward, and the collaboration within our teams are what make us more than just care providers - we become partners in empowering lives. #transformingcare #communitysupport #independence #personcentredcare #compassionatecare
💡Talking about health and social care challenges shouldn’t be off-limits. Through honest conversations, we find better solutions, learn how to cope and connect with others who understand the hurdles we face. Acknowledging these obstacles doesn’t weaken us - it strengthens our ability to drive meaningful change. One of the biggest challenges I face in my role as a Divisional Referrals & Admissions Specialist is proving why we should be the partner to provide the care. It’s not just about offering a service - it’s about earning the trust of local authorities and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs). It’s about being allowed to support someone and showcase how we can be part of their journey towards independence. That’s no easy task… But I don’t let that challenge stop me. I overcome it by sharing our success stories and highlighting our positive impact on the people we support. 👉 I invite my colleagues to step up and share their expertise, ensuring that we’re not just one voice but a team of knowledgeable and passionate professionals who consistently communicate and follow up. The road may not always be smooth, but every challenge is a chance to prove our dedication, build stronger relationships, and ultimately make a difference in the lives of the people we care for. We often act for health practitioners facing proposed 'immediate action' from Health Practitioner National Boards, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Office of the Health Ombudsman (OHO) in Queensland. Facing the prospect of having immediate action taken against their professional registration can be one of the most stressful times in a health practitioner’s professional career, and it can be difficult for health practitioners to determine who to turn to for assistance. Acting without receiving appropriate advice is fraught with risk and can have far reaching effects. It’s important for health practitioners in this situation to seek specialist advice early. https://bit.ly/37zSYep #employmentlaw #industriallaw #workplacerights #healthpractitioners #immediateaction #officehealthombudsman

👏 Regulation of NHS Managers will prevent the revolving door that allows individuals with a record of poor performance or misconduct to continue to work in the health service. Toxic management is always at the heart of every patient harm case and staff grievance. Toxic murky cultures and the harm this causes to people is a public health crisis we can no longer ignore. Do no harm! To staff and patients. This is long overdue... but it's a step in the right direction. I'm curious to see how this pans out. #NHS #Healthcare #Culture #Toxic #Strategy #ESG
Consultant on workforce culture. Nominated 2021, 2022 and 2024 as one of the top UK HR influences by HR Magazine
Great. Bring it on. Long overdue. I have seen too many conscientious staff who have raised legitimate concerns having their careers wrecked and health ruined. NHS managers who silence whistleblowers could be barred from working in the NHS, under proposals being announced this week https://lnkd.in/eVqXBp9t
