Dr. Robbs believes optometry faces a branding challenge. While legislative advancements and scope expansion are vital, they fall short without enough optometrists to meet patient demand. Through the Future Optometric Doctors Program, Dr. Robbs is shifting the focus to high school students, introducing them to the rewarding medical, technical, and interpersonal aspects of the profession. By planting the seeds early, the program aims to create a robust pipeline of future optometrists, ready to make an impact. How do you think we can inspire the next generation to choose optometry? Last week, Kyle Klute OD FAAO, wrote another great blog! I found one resource particularly impactful, which was Dr. Ada Noh’s practical advice for optometrists starting or expanding their dry eye practice. She describes a path for starting a dry eye practice with simple actionable steps that I would call a "crawl, walk, run” philosophy, as it offers a roadmap for delivering meaningful care, no matter the stage of your practice. Dr. Noh's guidance remindeds me of an ongoing debate in our profession: the role of specialization versus comprehensive care. Kyle takes a hypothetical story as an example: "Sarah" a high myope with retinal concerns, dry eye, and children already developing myopia. In a specialized care model, Sarah and her family could bounce between multiple providers for each specific need. But what if one optometrist could do it all? Comprehensive optometry allows us to treat Sarah’s dry eye, manage her children’s myopia, and assess her retinal health—while providing expert care to her mother. This approach isn’t just efficient; it strengthens the patient-provider relationship and ensures continuity of care. As optometrists, we’re not just clinicians; we’re problem-solvers, prevention champions, and trusted partners in our patients’ eye health journey. Whether we call it primary eye care or comprehensive optometry, the goal is the same: ✔️ Address immediate needs. ✔️ Anticipate future challenges. ✔️ Deliver exceptional, full-scope care. Let’s celebrate the versatility and accessibility of optometry. By practicing to the fullest extent of our licensure, we can be the “everything eye doctor” our communities need. 🔍 How do you strike a balance between specialization and comprehensive care in your practice? 💡 Let’s discuss how we can evolve and embrace a narrative that champions continuity, versatility, and excellence. #Optometry #DryEyeCare #ComprehensiveOptometry #PatientCare #LeadershipInOptometry
