PhD fellowship in Inorganic Chemistry Department of Chemistry, Section for Inorganic Chemistry invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in Quantum Materials Discovery and chemical modification of low dimensional magnets.  Start date is 01.12.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The project The PhD project targets the discovery, functionalization and understanding of new quantum materials, with especial emphasis on magnetic materials with low dimensionality. The successful candidate will focus on the synthesis of complex solid state compounds by combining crystal growth (e.g. chemical vapor transport and optical floating zone techniques) and soft chemistry methods. The project will also involve a detailed structural and electronic characterization using scattering and spectroscopic techniques, and the measurement of the physical properties. The ultimate goal is to establish structure-property relationships in materials that exhibit novel magnetic and electronic behaviors, as a platform for the realization of new quantum phenomena. https://lnkd.in/dmserZ6n

🌟 Conference in Guatemala 🌟 Our PhD Candidate Rony Letona gave a fascinating lecture at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala on the topic: "Thermodynamic Properties of Molecular Crystals" Where he shared a little about the fundamental theory explaining crystal structure prediction, with an emphasis on simulating how crystals expand and contract under pressure and temperature. He went on by mentioning some of his results and remaining challenges during his PhD at Avant-garde Materials Simulation. Finally, he invited all chemistry students to pursue further studies by doing an MSc and PhD. [Meet our doctoral candidates 12/19]   Meet Katharina Z., a doctoral candidate at the Department of Chemical Engineering - NTNU, supervised by Sulalit Bandyopadhyay (Department of Chemical Engineering - NTNU), John de Mello (Department of Chemistry) and Ethayaraja Mani (Indian Institute of Technology, Madras).    She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Technische Universität Dresden in Chemistry. While studying, she was a synthesis student assistant at the Chair of Inorganic Molecular Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry, working on synthesis of phosphorous containing molecules as well as #MOFs and hydrophilization of active carbon for #supercapacitor applications. During her studies for the master’s degree in August 2018, she went on exchange to Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), where she was specializing on nanotechnology, also conducting specialization project at the Department of Material Science - NTNU. Further, Katharina pursued her Master's thesis work at the Department of Physics - NTNU, under the supervision of Alexander Eychmüller (TU Dresden) and Pawel Sikorski, before joining IKP as PhD candidate in September 2020.     Her PhD project is solid #gold - at least in the core. She is researching the growth of #anisotropic gold nanoparticles and how different reaction conditions like binary #surfactant mixtures, reducing agents, or the #pH can influence the process at a fundamental level. The title of my PhD thesis had very good reasons to be phrased as such. I have learned how to build gold nanotriangles from atoms and dived into the mechanistic insights of nanocrystal formation. 💎 The next step was bringing these materials to application which requires exchanging the surfactant (CTAC) to a different ligand. 🔃 In our recent paper we report a rational approach to functionalize the surface of gold nanotriangles with negatively charged polyelectrolyte PSS as well as with biocompatible citrate. The latter is possible thanks to an elegant technique of coating 🥼 with an ultrathin silver layer to protect nanoparticles from irreversible aggregation when using acetone to wash away the surfactant. 🧪 Additionally, we show bulk refractive index sensitivity to be highly dependent on the size of gold nanotriangles and the type of ligand on their surface. 🔮 📖 Let me invite you to read the final chapter of my PhD work published in Nanoscale Advances by Royal Society of Chemistry (Nanoscience #RSCNano): https://lnkd.in/e6WUuBjJ Many thanks go to my co-authors from Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology for their support and assistance. 🙌🏼

PhD thesis submitted! Title: “Polydopamine in Ionic Liquids: Bridging Experiment and Computation for Structural Elucidation” Supervised primarily by the brilliant Prof. Katya Pas, my thesis focused on solving the elusive structure of the notoriously insoluble, melanin-like polymer, polydopamine (PDA). Harnessing the superior solvation ability of ionic liquids, I developed protocols to monitor the formation mechanism of PDA in the liquid state (using NMR, UV-Vis, IR and SAXS) for the first time. I combined this with a range of computational chemistry techniques including: - Polarisable Molecular Dynamics simulations to investigate dissolution and aggregation behaviour - Quantum mechanical calculations to determine interaction energies - DFT to examine reaction thermodynamics - TD-DFT to calculate vertical excitations Stay tuned 🤫
