After joining Liquid AI’s recent product launch at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I had the pleasure of sitting down with its co-founder, Ramin Hasani, and The Wall Street Journal for a fun conversation on the potential of Small Language Models (SLMs) in helping enterprises tap Gen AI at the edge (https://deloi.tt/4ftSqIw).    A few advantages we discussed:    🟢 As technology evolves rapidly, SLMs are more customizable and resource-friendly than their larger counterparts for different use cases, making it easier to evolve alongside technology than play catch-up.   🟢 Due to their smaller size, SLMs unlock new categories of AI features and offline functionalities at the edge, which requires less expensive hardware, connectivity, and energy to operate.  🟢 With fewer parameters, SLMs will be more understandable for everyday users, increasing trust, usability, and the number of actions these models can perform autonomously on a user’s behalf.    As Ramin shared during our conversation, organizations in the future won’t be dealing with just one AI model — they’ll be orchestrating many smaller ones. But there’s always the caveat of ensuring that humans stay in control. 

Absolutely agree with this. Small language models have come a long way. With the right tuning they can be very useful. Especially if tuned for domain specific tasks. They can run on edge devices and help to save the environment with lower power consumption. #SLM #SmallLanguageModels #AI
