🛫 Understanding Airport Runway Codes 🛬 Have you ever found yourself thinking about how they number the runways in airports? Here is an overview. Runway Numbers: Each Runway has two numbers between 01 & 36 assigned according to the magnetic heading. The number which is known as runway number represents one-tenth of the direction in degrees. If a runway falls on 90° c, it shall be numbered 09 whereas it shall be 27 for 270°. Opposite Directions: There are two numbers assigned for each runway that are 180 degrees apart. Thus if one end is 09 then the other one shall be 27. Left, Right, Center: For airports with parallel runways-toward identical directions, a letter is added to differentiate them. Runways can be 09L and 09R where L and R stands for Left and Right respectively. In case there are three such runways the middle one would likely have been marked 09C.
