Here are the key takeaways from the April 2, 2024 'Making Spaces Inclusive and Accessible: A Conversation on Intellectual Disabilities and Equity' hosted by the American Public Health Association: - Healthcare professionals need more training and experience to support people with disabilities effectively. Call to action: Implement disability-focused education and hands-on training programs for healthcare workers. - Poor coordination between providers and lack of accessibility create barriers to care for people with disabilities. Call to action: Establish integrated care models and enforce ADA requirements to improve access. - Stigma and lack of understanding fuel discrimination against people with disabilities. Call to action: Launch public awareness campaigns and sensitivity training for groups like law enforcement. - Inadequate funding and resource allocation limit disability services and support. Call to action: Re-evaluate budgets and increase funding for programs that empower people with disabilities to live fully. The key is centering the needs and perspectives of disabled individuals, treating them with respect, and taking concrete steps to dismantle barriers. Community organizations and loved ones should offer support while respecting autonomy. #NPHW2024

December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (#IDPD). This year’s theme, 'Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,' highlights the critical need to empower people with disabilities to take on leadership roles in the health sector and beyond. Despite making up 16% of the world’s population, persons with disabilities often face systemic barriers such as widespread ableism, discrimination, stigma and lack of access to essential services and opportunities, which then further limit their access to leadership positions, particularly in health care and health-related sectors. This day is a reminder to address these systemic issues and support people with disabilities to foster a more equitable and inclusive future for all. Today HFA joins partners around the world to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year, the theme is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.”. Persons with disabilities make up 16% of the global population, yet they rarely access leadership roles in the health sector. They commonly face numerous barriers that prevent them from accessing these roles, such as discrimination, stigma, or exclusion from education and employment opportunities. HFA recognizes that amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities is essential to make meaningful progress in achieving global health goals, advancing health equity for all, and building a more inclusive and sustainable future. Let's celebrate the contributions of persons with disabilities and work together to build a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future for all. #DisabilityDay #EveryoneIncluded

🌍 On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we at the PSA support this year’s theme of amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future. Disabled people make up 16% of our global population and actively involving disabled people in debate and design is essential to inform more inclusive health services. Today, we recommit to: • Breaking down barriers of discrimination where we can • Promoting meaningful engagement in decision-making • Supporting equitable access to health services • Celebrating the unique contributions of individuals with disabilities We will also continue to encourage improvements in data collection on complaints to better understand and address diversity issues in healthcare. Together, we can build a more inclusive healthcare system that recognises the dignity and potential of every individual and listens to the voices of those affected. #DisabilityDay #IDPD #EveryoneIncluded, #GlobalGoals #CRPD

Did you know? - An estimated 1.3 billion people experience significant disability. This represents 16% of the world’s population, or 1 in 6 of us. - Some persons with disabilities die up to 20 years earlier than those without disabilities. - Persons with disabilities have twice the risk of developing conditions such as depression, asthma, diabetes, stroke, obesity or poor oral health. - Health inequities arise from unfair conditions faced by persons with disabilities, including stigma, discrimination, poverty, exclusion from education and employment, and barriers faced in the health system itself. This year's theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities is: Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future. Today, we recognize the importance of digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities. As we celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day, let's reflect on how far we have come and how much further we need to go to ensure everyone has access to the same digital opportunities. In the spirit of progress and support for accessibility, we urge our fellow Massachusetts residents to actively advocate for continued support of vital programs that make a real difference. Senator Michael D. Brady has filed Amendment 464 to secure crucial funding for our program, which is a vital safety net for individuals with disabilities, seniors, veterans, and families across the state. Here's how you can help: Reach out to your state senator and urge them to co-sponsor Amendment 464 to provide $500,000 in missing annualization funding to support durable medical equipment reuse. You can find your senator's contact information here: https://lnkd.in/eDJhQuG Let's use Global Accessibility Awareness Day as a reminder to champion the causes that help integrate technology and accessibility into everyday life. Each action, each voice, and each effort counts towards building an inclusive future. #GAAD #Accessibility #Inclusion #DigitalAccessForAll #Massachusetts #Legislature #SupportAmendment464 #MAPoli #AssistiveTechnology #DurableMedicalEquipment #Reuse #Recycle #A11y

I often explore areas where vulnerability intersects with systemic issues, such as safety and human rights. One alarming statistic that continues to deeply resonate with me is that individuals with disabilities are three times more likely to be sexually assaulted than those without disabilities (World Health Organization, 2021). This stark disparity is not just a statistic; it's a glaring indication of the urgent need for tailored protective measures and comprehensive support systems. I want to emphasize the importance of understanding the vulnerabilities that contribute to such high rates of sexual assault among people with disabilities. It is crucial to implement specialized training for caregivers, law enforcement, and legal personnel to recognize, prevent, and properly address sexual assaults against individuals with disabilities. Our advocacy doesn't stop at awareness; it extends to action. We need to push for better support at all levels—from healthcare and legal aid to community services. Every measure we take brings us closer to a society where the rights and safety of every individual are upheld. Let's use this knowledge not just to inform, but to inspire change. Together, we can make a difference. Join me in advocating for a safer, more inclusive world. #DisabilityRights #SexualAssaultAwareness #InclusionMatters https://lnkd.in/gNdkemzG

🌎 Today is International Day of Disabled People, a moment to reflect on inclusion and understanding. 🌏 I live with Ankylosing Spondylitis, and my life is often lived on the border of ability and disability. Some days, I feel fully able—running, walking, cycling, swimming, socializing, staying out late, and sleeping peacefully through the night. Then, without warning, the tide shifts. 🌊 Suddenly, I am disabled. I can’t walk or lift my arm. Sitting or standing brings discomfort. I can’t make it to the office or care for my kids independently. Social plans are cancelled, and life feels smaller for a while. Living with an unpredictable condition has taught me so much about resilience, compassion, and the importance of designing workplaces, communities, and systems that are accessible to everyone. Disability can be visible and invisible, temporary, or cyclical, yet it profoundly shapes how we engage with the world. I am spending time reflecting on how we can create more inclusive environments, not just for those visibly disabled but for everyone navigating their own challenges. If you have thoughts please get in touch I really want to hear how I can better support with the work I am doing. 📣 To my fellow warriors on this journey, I see you. 💙 #InternationalDayOfDisabledPeople #Inclusion #Accessibility
