How can students balance the pressure of grades with the need to explore their interests and learn independently? Anci Shah, faculty chair of computer programming, offers her advice. “As a student, I worried about every little thing and every little grade. The bottom line is, as long as you finish, get your degree and work hard, you don't need to worry too much about specific details. What you learned and your degree specifics will differ in the real world. The industry is changing so much. Whether you're in tech or not, most companies are looking for something called intellectual curiosity. This means what you learn on your own. The classes you take are a great start, but if you find something interesting or want to explore further, use Google, read books and learn more about it. In a world where degrees seem to matter less and skills matter more, the story of Brian Young - who quit NUS to attend Ecole 42, a coding school with no teachers or tuition fees - might seem like the ultimate success story. But is this the future of education or a path only a privileged few can access? 🤔 Brian’s perseverance and technical mastery are undeniably inspiring, but here’s the catch: Schools like Ecole 42 pride themselves on being “accessible,” yet their rigorous, self-driven model isn’t for everyone. And let’s be real - how many of us can afford to spend four years abroad without a teacher, relying on peer learning? 🧐 Tech companies love to say "skills over degrees," but why was Brian *still* jobless for two years after the pandemic; and had to only recently settle for a government job? 👉 On the one hand, our education system is struggling to teach kids the core competencies, like math and literacy, so we need to do those better. On the other, students 👨🎓 are uninspired by school and lost as to what to do post-grad, so we should focus on connecting kids with their #passions. ⏳ There’s a sense in the education world that there aren’t enough hours in the day to address both these problems. It’s an either-or. 🎙 But my recent conversation with MacKenzie Price is Exhibit A in the case against that dichotomy.  🔥 Mackenzie founded Alpha, a private school network that concentrates instruction in the core subjects to two hours and uses the remaining time to create opportunities for students to build #lifeskills and follow their passions. 💡 Their condensed curriculum has produced such impressive results that she has bottled into a new app 2hr Learning, designed to allow for educators everywhere to drive similarly efficient and transformative learning. 👇 I included our full conversation in the comments below.
