𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐅𝐘𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐏𝐋𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐓 𝐙𝐄𝐑𝐎! Triple Net Zero refers to achieving net zero energy, net zero water, and net zero waste. As society continues to tackle issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, waste and pollution, designers are being encouraged to rethink design processes and adopt a triple net-zero design mindset within a circular economy framework to reconnect humans with nature and enable people, communities and natural systems to regenerate. In 2024, three key principles will supercharge society’s transition from a linear economy to a circular one — designing out waste and pollution; keeping products and materials in use; and regenerating natural systems. With designers looking beyond embodied carbon and considering metric-driven targets for water, nutrients, air, biodiversity, and social and health categories too, we will see projects adopting waste-free systems that utilize renewable resources and energy; water-sensitive urban design integrating stormwater, water supply and sewage management into developments; and principles of passive design becoming second nature. These principles are something FIRCO GROUP and our design arm Barnaby Sloane will continue to incorporate into our future projects. https://lnkd.in/eq6tzFBn #triplenetzero #netzero #design #construction #constructiondesign

Happy Earth Week Everyone! As we reflect on our commitment to sustainability, the focus on Embodied Carbon is pivotal, especially as we approach our 2030 goals. This critical element represents the carbon emitted during the extraction, manufacturing, and transportation of building materials, essentially locking it in for the lifespan of our projects. For those new to this analysis, I would love to talk about an easy, intuitive, and quick approach to early-phase embodied carbon projections. Developed right here at NBBJ Design, ZeroGuide is an early phase carbon estimation tool that provides projections for embodied, operational, and transportation carbon. With some really basic inputs, you can use ZeroGuide to set benchmarks and targets for energy performance, understand the PV potential on your rooftop, and provide early embodied carbon estimations for each scope. Recently, we used #ZeroGuide on one our projects to project embodied carbon during concept phase. This was followed by a more detailed analysis in Design Development (DD) using Tally by our team along with our structural consultants. We found that the carbon estimates provided by ZeroGuide closely matched the more detailed projections from the DD phase. This promising outcome adds a new layer of reliability to the tool and suggests potential to refine how we approach building design from the outset. It was not just a win for our project team but a validation of our efforts to integrate sustainability into every stage of our design process. To access ZeroGuide, just log in to: https://lnkd.in/gfx9V-4F. If you have questions, feedback, or are just curious - we would love to talk to you about how to implement this on your project. This Earth Week, let’s celebrate how far we’ve come and the tools like ZeroGuide that help us get there. Every small estimation and adjustment brings us closer to reducing our projects' carbon footprints, making a big difference in our environmental impact. Here's to keeping our carbon footprint so small, it's like we're tiptoeing! #sustainability, #embodiedcarbon, #architecture

[NEW REPORT] Today, we are proud to share the Closed Loop Foundation’s latest report, Better Buildings: Key Drivers for Constructing a Better Built Environment in the U.S., which provides a pulse on circularity in the built environment landscape in the U.S. The report, which was researched and authored by Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy, explores innovative concepts and approaches related to design, such as design for deconstruction and healthy materials innovation as well as building management tools like building information modeling and end-of-life strategies such as adaptive reuse that champion circular economy principles. It then provides an overview of federal, state and city regulations advancing circularity through mandated emissions reductions and waste diversion targets. It also examines various cross-sector collaboration models, with a spotlight on financing gaps and opportunities. We would like to extend our gratitude to 3M for funding this body of work, helping to fill a current knowledge gap around the built environment and circularity within the U.S. Read the full paper at the link below to learn how we can reimagine the way we design, construct, use and reuse buildings for a circular future here: https://lnkd.in/eiAH_q5z #CircularEconomy #CircularBuiltEnvironment

🌍 House of No Waste: Catalyzing Circular Solutions for a Zero-Emission Construction Sector The construction sector faces significant resource challenges, including material waste, unrecoverable resources, space inefficiencies, and downcycling. These challenges must be addressed for the sector to transition toward zero-emission, efficient, and resilient buildings. This session, centered on the House of No Waste (HoW) concept, will inspire creative, circular solutions to tackle these critical issues and catalyze systemic change in the construction industry. ✨ Session Overview: The session will present key facts and figures from UNEP/GlobalABC reports, highlighting the challenges of material waste, inefficiency, and resource depletion in construction. With a focus on circularity, the HoW initiative—co-developed by UNU-FLORES—will be introduced, linking it to the broader mission of advancing a zero-emission construction sector. Attendees will participate in an interactive live survey in a pop-up science lab, where they will contribute ideas, identify barriers, and explore opportunities to foster a circular construction industry. These insights will inform an architectural competition for a pilot in Germany and international workshops known as “HoW Labs,” aimed at advancing circular construction practices. 🎙️ Speakers Include: Edeltraud (Edel) Guenther 📅 Discover the full agenda and follow us live with the streaming link here: https://lnkd.in/gNFtFQzC 👉 For directions, event schedules, and more, visit the Pavilion page: https://lnkd.in/ew6ZwyGS We look forward to seeing you at the Buildings and Cooling Pavilion! #ActOnCooling #BuildForClimate #COP29

Meeting the energy efficiency benchmarks set forth in Executive Order 14057 requires extensive planning and comparison. Along with my colleagues and fellow sustainable design leaders Ken Golovko, and Rajat Wadhwa, I recommend setting benchmarks that eliminate waste as part of your facility strategy. That means a unique, actionable plan for every portfolio of building stock within the entirety of the federal government’s holdings. My colleague Riccardo Paccaloni and I took a day on the field to visit Nordbygg, in order to gather impression about the general state of circular businesses in the #construction, #installation and #interior sectors. Really nice to get close to the tomorrow's products and solutions every now and then, meet the people behind them and use multiple senses to spark new ideas. Here's my key take-aways from the day: ⚡ Energy & resource efficiency has been, and is, a ubiquitous theme among all products consuming heat, electricity and water, and it's impressive to see the efficiency gains of new products compared to a couple of cycles ago. At the same time, now that 'everyone's doing it', the low-hanging fruit is starting to disappear. So we left the conference wondering 'what's next' ✅ Simplicity is another central theme, with smarter installation solutions requiring less material and work. An additional benefit down the line would be that replacing, upgrading, or repairing could become more cost-effective as well. 📜 The key environmental tool in focus seems to be the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which a lot of businesses showcased front and center. An interesting datapoint that regulatory pressure does spark action. Imagine the kind of action an ambitious and comprehensive #ESPR directive would trigger. ❌ What we didn't see so much were outright circular solutions, at least not upfront. When we started poking around it was clear that several interesting initiatives are underway in some companies, but it's not something businesses choose to communicate so proactively. 💡 One thing I think is needed is for companies to go back to the drawing board and identify their key business cases for increased #circularity, whether it's purchasing more recycled or refurbished component or parts, closing the loop through take-back, or selling more utility rather than products. #PaaS In summary, now that we've gone through a few frothy years of energy efficiency, it's time to also start focusing on product circularity!

It's World Earth Day 🌍 🌿 Not just a day to celebrate the importance of our planet but to reflect on the importance our collective actions have on safeguarding our planet for future generations. Buildings are currently responsible for 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions: 28% from operational emissions, from the energy needed to heat, cool and power them, and the remaining 11% from materials and construction. This presents an opportunity and onus of responsibility for all involved in the construction industry to make a difference by delivering sustainable buildings and reducing carbon emissions. VZDV Consulting Engineers have responded to this challenge and are committed to designing buildings that are environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and resilient to climate change impacts. We have an impressive portfolio of buildings that are net zero carbon in operation or #Passivhaus certified across the leisure, education and residential sectors. We recognise that sustainability isn't just a policy but a core principle that drives innovative solutions across all that we do, committing to minimising our impact on the planet and shaping a better future for the generations ahead. #Passivhaus #Sustainability #WorldEarthDay #NetZero
