The Conference on ASEAN SCP Policies and Practices: Celebrating 12 Years of German-Southeast Asian SCP Cooperation was held this week at the DoubleTree by Hilton Shah Alam i-City Malaysia, marking 12 years of cooperation between SE Asia and Germany. According to the Selangor Menteri Besar, Y.A.B. Dato Seri Amirudin Shari this cooperation reflects ASEAN’s leadership in promoting SCP as a strategy to address environmental challenges and create job opportunities. “Our goal is to drive SCP policies that not only reduce environmental footprints but also create meaningful job opportunities for our people. At the recent Penang International Green Conference and Exhibition 2024, Gamuda showcased its commitment to a sustainable future through its Silicon Island Development (SID). The event brought together industry leaders, including Penang Chief Minister YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, to explore transformative solutions for greener communities. During the panel discussion, “Transform Your Supply Chain for a Greener Future: The Private Sector’s Role”, Group Chief Communications and ESG Officer, Ong Jee Lian, shared Gamuda’s approach to integrating ESG principles throughout its supply chain, emphasising support for its partners in this journey. Meanwhile, in a separate sponsor sharing session, Eddie Chan, SID’s Masterplanning Director, presented the groundbreaking Silicon Island project. Designed as a "15-Minute City" with 45 percent carbon reduction target, integrated green-blue networks and a smart transit system, the project sets a global benchmark for resilient, green urban planning. I recently came across an article that was incredibly eye-opening, exploring how sustainability has been a core practice for generations, deeply rooted in traditional ways of life. It’s fascinating to see that what we now view as “modern sustainability” was once simply the way people lived, conserving resources, minimizing waste, and respecting the balance of nature. This knowledge sheds light on the importance of maintaining these practices in our current era, where the impacts of unsustainable choices are more visible than ever. With the environmental challenges we face globally, I truly hope that Malaysia will continue to embrace and strengthen these values.
