Creation over Consumption
Hanging out at the corner of inspiration and technology, captivating possibilities for creation are emerging. Amidst the excitement, one theme reverberates: the potential of AI-driven tools to revolutionize the creative process.
With a brief, confusing first career as a songwriter and musician (emphasis on brief), I love the process of creating, collaborating with others to broaden the aperture, and reshaping it on the stage. From high school endeavors with a 4 track, borrowed instruments, and nothing but time, I created bedroom epics. Later, I was fortunate enough to record in professional studios, although the unpaid nature of the work limited the time to dig in and allow the work to breathe through studio collaboration.
History has shown that advancements also lead to elevations in art. From the painted canvas to movies made on mobile phones, humans and artists will always strive to push the envelope. #AI can open access to new worlds and tools, allowing creators to focus the passion that fuels their art. With barriers to entry lowered, it opens the door to artists yearning to share their world. A bonus side effect? More appreciation for the arts, and a growing practice of creation.
Tools like #Sora, #Midjourney, and #Suno empower users to create faster, explore diverse styles, and expand their creative horizons. In the “No Priors” podcast below, Suno CEO Mikey Shulman talks about the tools in a manner not to just deliver content, but also foster the collaboration between artists, experienced and new alike.
With any shift, there will be understandable concerns - specifically in this case, copycats creating unauthentic work in the interest of fast success. This has always been the case with art forms. Nirvana shifted music for a generation, and introduced us to many authentic, awesome artists… but also produced some not-as-inspiring copycats. The art that remains on our playlists today reflects authentic creation that still speaks to and inspires us.
I’ll close with a quote from Scott Belsky's latest "Implications" newsletter: “GenAI will evolve the tools of creativity, but will never replace them because the instruments of creative expression are how we share the humanity in each of us, combined with our taste.”

The project, Simulator-Informed Neural Networks (𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐬.𝐜𝐨𝐦), explores how to leverage the speed and flexibility of machine-learning representations of physics-based models. I am interested in extending the utility of simulation models by modernizing essential methods and algorithms.
𝐍𝐨 𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐘𝐏𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝. I explore how established methods can be accelerated and robustified with a speedy but accurate ML surrogate model.
