It's not that different in some ways of other challenging behavioral situations, right? So substance use. The belief is that if you simply don't drink then you won't be an alcoholic. But the issue is it's really not as simple as that. Likewise with ADHD, you could simply just listen to me the first time I told you to do it and just behave. But it's not as simple as that. And what often happens is children end up having symptoms of low self esteem. Depression and anxiety develop because they're constantly messing up. They're constantly being asked to do things they forget to do them they impulsively. Make the wrong decision now. Before you know it, their parents are mad at them, yelling at them again, their teacher is upset with them. So you create a really negative spiral that can bring in depression and anxiety. On the other hand, much akin to drinking and substance use, you do have to, as part of your treatment, just stop drinking. And so there has to be some behavioral interventions and. Self management tools that are learned to manage your ADHD. Some folks can do that without the use of medications. Other folks find they just can't do it without medications. A lot of times adults, it depends on their career, it depends on what is expected at work, whether they would benefit from medications or not. So self regulation, self management are important skills to use as as part of this I I would say.
