Hi everyone. Welcome to Alliance Advisors. I'm Francesco, joined by my co-host Dennis. Today we're going to tackle a different category and what appliances break the most. I start to Twitch because these are all the calls we got. Exactly. Yeah, these are the manager escalations. So we're gonna throw some stuff out there for sure. What we see in the reason we can talk about this too is we have a full service department. So these are things that we see every single day from customers, from our service department. So these are things that. We have a lot of experience with for sure. And which appliances tend to break the most. Now, that's not to say that you shouldn't buy them. Some of this comes down to maintenance. Some of them may come down to just, you know, the type of appliance in general may tend to break more often. Sometimes luck. Yep. Sometimes luck. Absolutely. So let's jump right into it. What would you say are kind of some of the appliances that break the most? It's unequivocally starts with ice. Yeah. Anything to do with ice. Yeah. I don't care if it's a freestanding ice maker. Or if it's an ice maker in the door, ice and water or just and the reason being is in most cases these this plastic, right? If you go to your refrigerator or any iceberg you have, you see plastic and what is it trying to do? Grind something that's almost as hard as a rock. Yeah, like, it's just common sense that it's gonna break a lot. And let's start out with the most common, because you sell the most of them, will be refrigerators with ice and water. Now, right there, people generally say one of two things. They're either addicted to both the ice in the water or they're addicted to just water. You know, and I tell people on the waterfront, you know, if you're somebody that's addicted to water, then you should really be doing, you can change that whole thing and we can sell you an inline water filter that is superior to the water and way more economical and, and just amazing for you. But we won't, we won't get off that if it's water, but if it's ice. The ice maker is hard. And specifically if you like crushed ice, Yeah, crushed like ground ice, it's even, it's even worse. So, you know, the ones that go onto the counter and the ice makers, it's all down to maintenance. People don't descale them. There's very routine maintenance that needs to happen. A lot of times people are putting these outside. A lot of times people are buying models that don't have pumps. And what we mean by that is to propel the water out of the unit and they save a few dollars and they say, oh, well, I have gravity or I can, I can make gravity. Work in my favor because they make a type called the gravity drain. We won't even sell you a gravity fed model. Other stores will and it's reckless because invariably they break like 100% more than the ones with the umm. So get a lot more water build up kind of kicks back into the machine that yeah and the maintenance isn't easy on these things. You're talking really breaking it down. You have to soak it this solutions you got to run it through a cycle. So again the commitment to ice is real if you want it and really the expectation of not to be a Debbie Downer here but it's not if you're going to have service. Is really one. Yeah. And how often and you'll all have a story of. Well, my last ice maker I had for 10 years and didn't break. That's great. Then you about a brand new better thing. Spent more money and it broke in the first month. Absolutely. It's just it's not a fine art, like you said with the eyes. It's kind of like two different reasons. And you know, you go back to those French doors with the ice and water through the door, you know, the plastic parts and crushing. And part of that too is just, you know, it's inner refrigerator that you're trying to make freezer cold ice in the refrigerator. Horseshoe on the refrigerator too, so you're gonna get you know, melting and freezing again and blocks and it kind of gets clogged UO there's even on those there's definitely some maintenance like if you don't use the ice a lot, you know you really want to make sure you're taking that out, emptying it out so it's not kind of getting clogged up in there and definitely like you said with the undercount, it's for a completely different it's really all maintenance when it comes to that and the descaling and cleaning and things like that too, which kinda is similar to maybe the next one we'll talk about with the maintenance and the scaling and. That's coffee makers, yes. And and we talked about that in an episode earlier today as well, which was just, you know, coffee. Coffee makers in general require the consumer to be diligent about maintenance. Again, you're grinding beans a lot of times there's parts, but a lot of it is the descaling and the maintenance. And you're going to see that consistent theme on a lot of this with the exception of probably the last one we'll talk about, but for everyone else. We live a busy life now, it's hard to keep up with it in general, let alone now having to really, on a timed matter, maintain. And service your appliances if you're not going to be great at it. Then you just need to be grounded to some pitfalls that you're probably going to experience. Absolutely. And that's the thing like, you know, you talk about coffee makers and the built in ice makers. Of course, you know, we love selling those things. They're great for the people that use them and if you use them right, they're awesome appliances they have. But we're always trying to be upfront and set the right expectation. Now you have to listen. If you don't do this, you will have problems. It's not like you said, it's not a matter of when or if it's when you're going to have the problem. And I say the same thing too, even on the undercounter ice makers. Because that's an expensive purchase. It's an emotional one that people really are committed to ice. If they're buying something that produces that cup of ice that we offer a service now will preventatively maintain it for you, we'll come and clean it and descale it and do those things. It's an additional service, of course, but it's something that if you just know you're not going to be the one to do it routinely, see if the store that you're buying from offers any of those additional services to just take the headache away and we'll take care of. Yeah, someone definitely needs to do it for sure. So the next one, let's talk about this category. And this has been a. Have been coming back type of category so let's talk about combo washers all in one washers and dryers yeah so the old combo and we say oh there still exists yeah there's this 24 inch really compact all in one a lot of times running off a 110 power but even still that was out there they require real maintenance. There's a filter you gotta get down you got to remove it you got to scrape it out you gotta clean it routinely because the lint would attach to the innards of this unit. And if you weren't routine about taking out, you're going to need service calls. Um, so that's a unit that you just have a lot of service because it's kind of, again, a dirty job and one that really doesn't always identify that you need to clean it. Yeah, it's just telling you you routinely need to clean it. I think in most, it varies every couple weeks, every week. Some will say every time someone and people just don't do it. Yeah, absolutely. And this is a category too, like with the, you're starting to see a lot of new models out now from GE and LG. And Samsung, and they've gone to heat pump where you know, should be less lint buildup, they will dry faster. And while these ones haven't been out at nearly as long as some of the older models, you know, they seem to be better in some cases definitely with the GE and the LGA, But who knows what these are going to be like in the future too. And while we love these machines and I think they're great for the right person, there's definitely things just as far as performance that you need to consider as well, where if you're doing one load of laundry, that's OK, but it's going to take some time to wash and dry. And you're not able to kind of do that chain laundry like you do when you have two separate machines. Yeah. And if that if this all-in-one, just that that this conversation of a combo all in one washer is something that peaks your interest and you're like, I'd like to know more. Yeah, absolutely. Watch our videos. We have definitely in-depth broken down each one literally are showing you the effects taking the machines apart, the LG, the Samsung and the GPS. So we were kind of the 1st to test them in the country in most cases and the first to report on them. But we certainly are selling them the Samsung. They're not because it definitely collects lint. It's not you'll see it for yourself. And that's not we're not trying to be. You know, definitely, Yeah. So last one we're going to talk about here, microwave drawers, but not any microwave drawers. And now you're starting to see some microwave drawers and they've been out for a little bit in some models that have kind of that flipped down display. Yeah, folks. There isn't a brand out there that makes a microwave that you know almost well, you know, Sharp Sharps. Yeah, a major producer. Midday is another one. But most all of all of these are all of them are made in China, overseas, and there's only a couple of companies that do, and they make for everybody else but Sharp. Makes a flip down microwave door and now they make it. Thermador just went to this style. We sell them, we've had them, they've been out. But I will absolutely tell you on equivocally the flip down doors, they break. We have a, we have multiple showrooms and we have them in multiple places because there is a demand for them. But I will tell you only one in all of our showrooms. Work yeah, they, they, they don't they have a soft clasp if you will. So you depress it it's to fold down kind of on a slow mechanical roll and then you push it back and you kind of depress it and it's supposed to hold it just does not work that does not hold. And so you have a hat folded down panel flap down panel. I tell you this a lot of times because that unit with a lot of the programs and I'll just say a Thermador just went to this it's concerning to me because they give it away for free in that program when you buy this you get that and it's this fold down and we sell a lot of thermal. Love the brand. We sold a ton of their other microwaves because it did not have this fold down style so I just did something that people should consider. Thinking about and at the very least maybe you buy an extended warranty on it from the store that will. Sell your warranty it's just something I think now if you're gonna go that route you should yeah think about you're definitely adding a little bit more moving parts there that consistently is getting used every time you use the mic correct The microwave itself yeah works great yeah microwave draws up until that tilt down I will tell you microwave draws do not break off and actually a very low incidence or repair so these brands that make them do a really good job of the actual technical unit working it's this little it's constant moving of a very inexpensive plastic part opening and closing a drop down door that. Is where it's failing. OK, so really those are kind of the alliances that we see that tend to kind of break the most and again, not say that you shouldn't buy them but definitely some things that you should be aware of if you're considering those types of appliances.
