last week I completed my exam in applied ecology 😊 Grateful for the insights gained in Applied Ecology, which are shaping my approach to studing vector-borne diseases! 📢 Our research article at the Nocturnal Avian Ecology Lab (NAVEL) was published in Ecology and Evolution! 📚 The NAVEL Team at the A.P Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) embarked on an interesting journey to explore which methods work well for Afrotropical nocturnal birds by comparing the sampling effectiveness of 3 methods (point count, acoustic recorder and camera trap) in and around the Amurum Forest Reserve. 📉 Acoustic recorder and point count were discovered to have similar results in nocturnal bird detection and estimating richness across the different habitat types. 💡 Our findings highlight that either point count or acoustic recorders are useful for nocturnal bird surveys in Afrotropical environments. 🔍 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/edKStC73 #Nocturnalbirds #Afrotropics

🚶♂️🌲 Limitation 4: Overlooked Non-Vehicle Gaps 🌲 It’s no surprise that most road ecology studies focus on roads (duh), but what about other gaps like powerline easements or forest clearings? 📉 There are countless studies documenting the negative effects of habitat fragmentation, but the most surprising finding of our research was that non-road gaps are almost always overlooked in road ecology studies. The last time this was explored in any great detail was in 2003 (2003!) and found that the barrier effects of roads, meadows, and rivers on montane bird movements were similar. Road ecology studies need to include both road and non-road sites. We can’t say we truly understand the magnitude of road impacts on wildlife until we know how they compare to similar features in roadless areas. 🌿 #RoadEcology #LongTermImpact #DataDriven #Conservation #SustainableTransport #PhDLife #WildlifeResearch

The term “applied ecology of fear” describes the growing research field that applies the theory of the ecology of fear to manage wildlife behaviour. In our new study, we reviewed available studies that simulated predator presence and evaluated wat factors influence the effectiveness in creating behavioral changes in deer. Our meta-analysis suggested that acoustic cues hold most potential as a tool to manage deer behaviour. Major knowledge gaps remain that limit the effective use of such tools in wildlife management and future research should focus on improving our understanding of habituation to cues, on comparing the effectiveness of different types of cues, on simultaneously using a combination of cue types, and on testing cues at spatial–temporal scales of actual land-uses.
