Biofilm is a problem for many manufacturers. It is a slimy layer of cooperating microorganisms that may pose a danger to humans and animals through contaminated end products. Biofilm can form in areas where water flows regularly or is stagnant, such as pipes or water tanks. The microorganisms present in a biofilm, which can include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and yeasts, might be potential pathogens. Water flowing through pipes with biofilm can lead to contamination of products, potentially resulting in costly recalls. Regular disinfection is an effective method to mitigate biofilm buildup. Biological contaminants include bacteria, viruses, animal dander and cat saliva, house dust, mites, cockroaches, and pollen. There are many sources of these pollutants. By controlling the relative humidity level in a home, the growth of some sources of biologicals can be minimized. A relative humidity of 30-50 percent is generally recommended for homes. Standing water, water-damaged materials or wet surfaces also serve as a breeding ground for molds, mildews, bacteria and insects.
