In the construction industry, we’re used to building things that last—bridges, hospitals, and homes. But today, let’s focus on something even more important: building trust and support within our team. At Yanun, we are proud of our strong connections and values. As an Aboriginal owned and operated business, community is at the heart of what we do. So, on R U OK? Day, we encourage you to check in with your colleagues, friends, and family. A simple conversation could make all the difference. If you're unsure how to start a conversation, here's a simple guide to help 👉 https://lnkd.in/guhQkQG Let’s make sure that just like our projects, our people are strong and supported. #RUOKDay #MentalHealth #ConstructionCommunity #AboriginalBusiness #SupportOneAnother #WellbeingInWorkplaces

Kariakoo a WARD of opportunities situated in the CBD of Dar-es-salaam. In 2013, the tragic collapse of a building in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam, claimed many lives and left a lasting scar on the community. Now, in 2024, nearly the same story unfolds as rescue efforts continue for those still trapped in a collapsed high-rise. My heart goes out to the survivors, the families who lost loved ones, and the many still waiting for news. These incidents force myself to raise the below and many more unanswerable questions. 1. What if this happens again? 2. What if it happens in a high-rise housing corporate or government offices, where the stakes are even higher?3. What if it was one of our own or yourself stuck in a collapse building? 4. Any safety protocol and assemble emergency points? 5. Do we need a city revamp that addresses the safety protocol too? 6. The economic activities affected,Recovery Plan? While high-rise buildings contribute to the growth and development of urban spaces, they also bring critical concerns about safety. Again, my heart goes the lives that have been lost and to those who are still fighting to be alive under the concrete.

Mapping Lived Experiences in Katorong'ot I recently had the privilege of collaborating with the community in Katorong'ot to map their environment. It was a fascinating iterative process that ensured the final map captured the essence of their lived experience, not just broad generalizations. By identifying areas where roads are susceptible to flooding, the map highlights the need to improve infrastructure by revealing almost all roads to be vulnerable during heavy rains. Additionally, the map reveals areas in close proximity to an unplanned cemetery, which can pose potential health risks. The map also sheds light on housing patterns and densities within the community. This data can be crucial for informing future development initiatives. #informalsettlements #communitymapping #urbanplanning

It's te wiki o te reo māori 2024! To celebrate, we'll post some helpful housing terms in te reo māori this week! First up, it's Papakāinga! Papakāinga: "A group of houses developed as a community on collectively-owned Māori land, to provide housing for people of all ages that have ancestral connections to the land. In a planning context, papakāinga is understood as – any activity that the owners of land held under Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, that is in the traditional rohe of those tangata whenua, shall seek to undertake on their land to sustain themselves. Papakāinga may include (but not be limited to) residential, social, cultural, economic, conservation and recreation activities, marae, wāhi tapu, and urupā." This one's also in our housing glossary & you can read more here: https://lnkd.in/ga4RB-6R
