🌱 Bringing work home has never been so rewarding! SRUC has been working to develop our vertical farming capabilities, and our initial testing has already produced a bumper crop of fresh, fragrant basil. Tonight I found myself blitzing bags of it with a bit of olive oil to freeze for future use for fresh flavour forward recipes. The scent of innovation has never smelled so good! Vertical farming is reshaping how we think about the journey from “farm” to plate—challenging traditional ideas of what a farm looks like and where it can be. It’s a vision of the future where sustainable food production is closer to home, less resource-intensive, and tailored to meet diverse needs. Beef and potatoes: a recipe for sustainable farming on Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.). It’s a mash-up of innovation and sustainability! 🥔🤝🐄 Watch East Prince Agri-Environment Association’s video on this Living Lab – P.E.I. activity to develop and test innovative rotational grazing and land management practices. P.E.I. cattle and potato farmers like Kingston View Farms along with researchers from Prince Edward Island Potatoes are introducing cattle to fields in a potato rotation. What do we mean by regenerative farming, low-carbon farming, or sustainable agriculture? Stakeholders clearly find it hard to agree on the right term, but perhaps it is more simple than that. During a farm visit in Northumberland, UK, one of the farmers enrolled in our farming programme provided clarity in simple terms. When asked about regenerative farming, Thomas Todd replied: "𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦." This statement deeply resonated with us. Hence, we’ve decided to embrace it, not just as our motto but as a guiding principle for our farming programme. Our goal is to enhance soil health, build organic matter, and restore biodiversity, creating resilient supply chains that benefit all stakeholders in the supply chain. Just good practice covers everything Cefetra Ecosystem Services aims to achieve and it is what farmers naturally strive for. Every action that restores soil health and supports agronomic sense can be summed up as just good practice. We’re proud to launch this campaign by putting these values into action within our own team.
