One of the best ways to demonstrate the superiority of your product is by contrasting it against your competitor’s product. And as we’ve said before, the cooler the demonstration the higher the recall and the more likely people are to convert. Sometimes that means creating scenarios that can be dangerous. Always make sure you keep your cast and crew out of harms way. Here we placed a slider on the sand at a slight angle so that gravity could feed the camera so that it could track right to left. James volunteered as tribute since he’s done this a lot over the years. He placed the camera further back than the potential snapping radius of the strap. He let the camera go, then called action and ran even further out of harm’s way. We hope you enjoy the shot. Trade mark Own-Goals: When Your Brand Becomes the Product One of the greatest compliments to any brand is when customers love it so much they use its name to describe an entire product category. Yet, this level of success comes with a hidden risk: the genericide of a trade mark. Your trade mark needs to distinguish you from your competitors. If a brand becomes so successful that the brand is used to describe the product, the brand can be removed from the register – because it no longer identifies a particular trader. Some brands go to extremes to try to stop their brands becoming generic. Take Velcro Companies' famous “Don’t Say Velcro” campaign. Through a humorous YouTube video, Velcro educated the public on why it’s important to refer to their product as “Velcro” and others as “hook-and-loop.” It’s a delicate dance—remaining beloved by consumers while protecting legal rights, and Velcro manages it with class, making an important legal point while keeping everyone smiling. The Lesson: The challenge of trade mark genericide highlights the balancing act every successful brand must perform. Be proud of becoming an icon, but stay proactive in educating your audience. If managed with dignity and grace, even the risk of “too much success” can transform into a brand-strengthening moment.
