Worlds first AI Software Engineer is here ! This is probably just a trailer of what’s to come forward in world of AI, tech and how it’s going to affect us. Yesterday, Cognition announced Devin, first AI software engineer. Yes. You read that right. I don’t think Margaret Hamilton would have ever thought that we would have AI software engineers. Devin can take on entire software projects on its own. It can even find the bugs and use print statements to debug and fix it. It’s a step forward in world of AI as to train AI to be a software engineer is not as simple as it sounds. It requires the model to make some very complex decisions that we do on a daily basis as human software engineers, which at times even requires a team. I’m still on fence until I try and impressed with the capabilities at the same time, but this is the future and also a reminder that soft skills are gonna be what differentiates us from AI. I would love to know how adaptable it is with different languages and how efficient it is when it comes to decision making as many times as software engineers we make decisions that prioritize robustness over quickness and vice-versa. It’s a very exciting time in tech world. 🦾 What are your thoughts on Devin? 🦾 How do you think it’ll change the scenario of software engineering? 🦾 Are software engineering degrees still gonna matter? 🦾 Should we start using “Human Software Engineer” as our job title? "A whole new world of great opportunities is opening up with the advancement of AI. It has the potential to revolutionize the way we work and connect, much like how the internet did. However, we need to be mindful of the ethical implications of its misuse. I have been educating myself about the different aspects of AI. Thank you for sharing, Yatri."

8moThis is certainly a great milestone in terms of progress on AI assistants. As each day progresses, I find AI tools like Amazon Q and other Chatbot tools saving me a lot of time. However, there are times when human ingenuity and input certainly become more important. AI tools can be used to quickly parse large docs but certainly have a long way to go before the solutions provided by them are 100% reliable. Software Engineering is going to matter more going forward, especially to enable companies ensure they have a quality codebase and to move forward in a sustainable way without incurring a lot of tech debt. However, assuming these tools can become good "coding buddies", I would not be against using the "Human Software Engineer" title moving forward if need be 😄 Thanks for sharing your views and starting a great conversation!
