This is why building and strengthening Community Capacity should be at the forefront of economic development.
Erie, Pennsylvania-Session 6 of the ARC Leadership Institute was incredible. Building Community Capacity was our session focus. Imagine for a moment your town with no social infrastructure. No schools, no churches, no recreation, no parks, no grocery stores, no restaurants, no Main Street or small businesses, no museums, no libraries, no places where people gather socially and interact. Would you want to live there without those things? Now think, are you a community member that makes investments in those entities whether through spending your hard earned money there, collaboration in community service, volunteerism, philanthropy, or just being a good, active citizen? Building and Sustaining Community Capacity is HARD WORK! Thankful for another week of collaborating with world changers across the 13 Appalachian States. These people are amazing human beings, doing amazing work in their states. Though our year together is coming to an end, the impact this group will make across Appalachia is just beginning! Big expeditions require preparation. After much work, the American Alpine Club is ready for our next expedition. We have done the research and preparation and we are equipped with the topo of the route—our three year Strategic Plan. What's the plan?? Some quick hits: ▶️ Member Services: Through our grants, lodging network, unparalleled rescue benefit, and more, we will continue to offer the resources and support you need to thrive. ▶️ Advocacy: Our advocacy initiatives provide critical insights into legislative matters, policy issues, and the evolving landscape of climbing access. A key objective in the coming year is to launch policy research and whitepapers that break down complex legislative topics that affect climbers. ▶️ Education: We are investing in both Accidents in North American Climbing (ANAC) and the American Alpine Journal (AAJ) by updating the usability of our extensive database of our past and present publications, to ensure that decades of first-ascents and accidents related data are easily available to climbers. Your support now, at the launch of this plan, will help us achieve our vision of helping climbers thrive. Join the Club or donate today. Your gift drives advocacy and education, building a vibrant climbing community and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. ----> https://lnkd.in/gZi3NBzu Graphic by Foster Denney Photo by Jeremiah Watt

Mt. Elbert in Sept 2023. Some ask why we summit Mt. Elbert when it takes 3 days and 50+ volunteers to serve 1 individual. It often comes into question if it is worth it when we could serve so many more in that timeframe with that team. Mt. Elbert is more than a single experience. It is symbolic of everything we are building together. It is emblematic of the glass ceiling we will continue to shatter as a community. We are the change, and if we can do this on Mt. Elbert year and year, and it becomes normal instead of "impossible", then every trail in every community can become adaptable through community strength. We can create something more inclusive and equitable in the mountains. For the record, we did create 110 other "impossible" trail experiences in 2023 :)

Mort and Sue Fuller, longtime philanthropists and advocates for ecological restoration, have initiated a transfer of Overlook, their 355-acre estate in North Abington, Pennsylvania, to the ownership and stewardship of Penn State. The Fullers’ gift, which also includes a monetary commitment, has a total valuation of $23.3 million and inaugurates a new era as "Penn State Fullers Overlook." The property will provide opportunities for cutting-edge research, facilitate on-site learning and enable collaborative partnerships with sustainability-oriented organizations. https://ow.ly/MFn850UaZWo

In September, the California Missions Foundation (CMF) was awarded a $750,000 federal grant for preservation repairs to Casa del Herrero, a National Historic Landmark property located in the Montecito community. Casa del Herrero, the “House of the Blacksmith,” is a time capsule of Montecito, California in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Designed by George Washington Smith, it is one of the finest standing examples of Spanish Colonial Revival Architecture in America. Once the private estate of industrialist George Fox Steedman and his descendants, the Casa is now a historic house museum and garden, stewarded by a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to its preservation and availability to the public. As a result of the granted funds presented to Casa del Herrero, the 1925 Andalusian-style country house will soon undergo preservation and needed conservation improvements to the venue. The work includes necessary repairs and strengthening of a bevy of unique Moorish fountains that dot the Casa’s historic landscape (many of which are damaged or broken). Preservation work will also be done on several other structures on the property. This project was funded in part by a Save America’s Treasures grant, administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior. Embracing our shared history is crucial in today's interconnected world. Recognizing and valuing the profound relationship between Indigenous peoples and their ancestral lands is vital to reconciliation and cultural respect. The Mountaineers' "We Are All Treaty People" initiative emphasizes the importance of such acknowledgment, providing a platform to honor the stewardship and enduring connections of Native communities to these lands. Land acknowledgments are more than a formality; they serve as a crucial step toward reconciliation and cultural respect. They remind us that Indigenous peoples have cared for the lands we enjoy and utilize today for millennia. By acknowledging this, we pay respect to their profound historical connection and recognize their ongoing contributions to conservation and sustainable practices. Furthermore, these acknowledgments encourage us to learn from Indigenous wisdom and leadership, which have long fostered environmental stewardship and sustainability. Embracing these practices and knowledge can guide us toward more responsible and aware interactions with our natural surroundings. As we move forward, let us commit to acknowledging the past and present roles of Indigenous peoples and actively supporting and engaging with these communities. Doing so ensures a more inclusive and enriched dialogue about our shared history and future environmental endeavors. Explore detailed insights from The Mountaineers' blog series to learn how land acknowledgments can lead to meaningful action and deeper connections to our natural places. Join the conversation, and let's honor the stewardship and enduring connections of Native communities to these lands. #LandAcknowledgment #IndigenousStewardship #EnvironmentalStewardship #Sustainability #mountaineers #native #indigenous
