The Effortless Asana: Attaining Steadiness Through Relaxation A perfected asana feels entirely effortless, requiring no exertion from either the body or the mind. True mastery of the posture is marked by complete ease and relaxation, where even the breath flows naturally without conscious awareness. Any discomfort, such as pain, jerks, or pinching sensations, signals that the posture is not properly aligned and needs adjustment. According to Patanjali’s teachings, one way to stabilise posture is through “attention on the infinite.” Steadiness cannot be found in the world's transient, ever-changing nature. Everything finite is subject to movement, fluctuation, and impermanence. In contrast, the infinite—the boundless, unchanging reality—remains constant and unmoving. By focusing the mind on the infinite, the practitioner absorbs its quality of steadiness, enabling the body and mind to settle effortlessly into stillness. This focus quiets the mind and allows the body to find a natural alignment where each part works harmoniously without strain. The posture becomes a physical position and gateway to inner stability and peace in this state. The essence of a perfected asana lies in achieving this balance—where the external form dissolves into stillness, and the mind transcends agitation. Through consistent practice, the student learns to embody the qualities of the infinite, experiencing a deep sense of groundedness and ease, even in a world marked by constant change.
