Mental health apps are proving to be essential tools: A recent study was conducted to test if patients could get some mental relief from using evidence based mental health apps, in the process of them seeking higher levels of care. Michigan Medicine found, “The study shows that depression and anxiety symptoms, and suicidality, all decreased measurably when patients were assigned to mobile applications that incorporated mindfulness practices, cognitive-behavioral therapy skills, or prompts that encouraged mood-enhancing activities”. This highlights the incredible potential of these apps for enhancing mental well-being, especially for those facing long wait times for therapy. K’Bro is an evidence informed game with the goal of cultivating emotional resilience and providing mental health support to youth. Since mental health waxes and wanes, having a resource at a child’s fingertips can help them get through a rough patch while awaiting further care. Let’s empower our youth with the tools they deserve. https://lnkd.in/eKzYUWYV

🌳Trees: A Hidden Key to Adolescent Mental Health Recent research suggests that trees and green spaces may hold the key to enhancing adolescent mental well-being. Numerous studies have explored the benefits of spending time in nature, particularly focusing on the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, for psychological health. Engaging with natural environments such as forests, parks, and other green spaces has been shown to support both physical and mental health. Specifically, forest bathing has been found to not only reduce overall stress levels but also improve physiological health markers, such as cardiovascular function. The current study delves into the theories explaining why nature has such a profound impact on health. The Attention Restoration Theory posits that time spent in nature helps improve attention span and mental alertness. Meanwhile, the Stress Recovery Theory suggests that being in natural settings can alleviate the negative physiological and psychological effects of stress. It is well-documented that stress reduction techniques like yoga, exercise, and meditation can yield numerous health benefits, including bolstered immunity, improved sleep, reduced inflammation, and a lower risk of depression and anxiety. However, much of the existing research on the health benefits of nature focuses on adults. Alarmingly, adolescent depression and anxiety rates in the United States surged by 59% between 2007 and 2017, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced mental health support for this age group. The current study investigates the impact of weekly forest bathing sessions over three weeks on the mental well-being of 24 participants aged 16-18. This research was conducted as part of a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) project, employing a convergent, parallel mixed-methods design. Participants' mood and well-being were assessed using the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Survey. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the adolescents' mental well-being following forest bathing sessions. Participants reported feeling more relaxed, happier, and less stressed. The study concludes that spending time in nature could be a cost-effective and accessible strategy for enhancing adolescent mental well-being and overall health. According to a new review of recent research evidence from the University of Southampton, King's College London, Stanford University and other institutes, problems with our sleep and internal body clock can trigger or worsen a range of psychiatric disorders. Our colleague, Dr Sarah Chellappa, said: “Sleep-circadian disturbances are the rule, rather than the exception, across every category of psychiatric disorder. "Sleep disturbances, such as insomnia, are well understood in the development and maintenance of psychiatric disorders, but our understanding of circadian disturbances lags behind. “It is important to understand how these factors interact so we can develop and apply sleep-circadian interventions that benefit the sleep and mental health symptoms of patients.” You can find out more about this research here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eEKsuQfS #WeAreUoS #MentalHealth #BodyClock #Research

Today is Mental Health Day, and for many of us, the conversation about mental health is deeply personal. Mental health struggles can sneak up on us, and before we know it, we’re caught in a downward spiral. It often feels like we’ve lost control, which is why recognizing the signs early is so crucial. Yet, too often, we wait until things have worsened before taking action. That’s what we’re working to change. At Dendron, we believe mental health care should be proactive, not reactive. We’ve just launched our blog to raise awareness about mental health and share our journey in developing a headset that can help identify, monitor, and alleviate mental health issues. Our first post explores how combining brain activity data with AI can provide more reliable predictions and insights into mental well-being—so people can take control before it feels out of reach. 🚀 Journey into the Future of Mental Health: Exploring tDCS with Mave Health! 🚀 Hello, LinkedIn family! 👋 I'm excited to introduce you to a groundbreaking program that harnesses the power of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS). This innovative technology has the potential to revolutionize mental health treatment! Imagine a world where we can gently stimulate the brain to help alleviate conditions like depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, insomnia, and more—without the need for invasive procedures or heavy medications. That’s where tDCS comes in! 🎉 🔬 What is tDCS? Transcranial direct current stimulation is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that delivers a gentle electrical current to specific brain areas. This process can enhance neural connectivity, promote neuroplasticity, and essentially “reboot” certain brain functions. It’s like giving your brain a little nudge to help it perform at its best! 💡Why is it Exciting? Personalized Treatment: tDCS can be customized to target specific symptoms. Whether it’s anxiety, depression, or focus issues, we’re dialing in for precision treatment. Accessibility: With its portable design, our tDCS device can be used at home, breaking down barriers to mental health care. Picture this—your cozy living room, a cup of chamomile tea, and a portable tDCS device. No hospital visits, no fuss. Holistic Approach: By integrating tDCS with traditional therapies, we can create comprehensive treatment plans that address the whole person—not just the symptoms. Minimal Side Effects: tDCS is well-tolerated, with known side effects being mild and temporary, such as skin irritation, headaches, or tingling sensations that typically dissipate within 10–15 minutes after device use. As I dive deeper into this fascinating field, I’ll share insights, research findings, and personal reflections (testimonials) on how tDCS is paving the way for new possibilities in mental health treatment. Let’s embark on this journey together! 💪 ✨ Stay tuned for more posts every week, and feel free to share your thoughts or questions in the comments below. Remember, mental wellness is our shared mission. Let’s light up those neural pathways! 🌟 Jai Sharma, Dhawal Jain, Aman Kumar, Suvrita, Bhavyakirti Jhala, Guru D, Shreya Naik, SNIGDHA SAMANTRAY, Shreya Heda

International Men’s Day: A Spotlight on Men’s Mental Health What does International Men’s Day mean for the mental health of men? How are men coping with depression, anxiety, and trauma? These are critical questions in a world where societal pressures and unhealthy coping mechanisms often take a toll on men's well-being. We live in a world that fosters poor coping strategies. Here are two major concerns: Toxic Social Dynamics Social media has become a breeding ground for politically charged discussions and toxic environments. Many men find themselves entangled in these debates, leading to heightened stress, anxiety, and depression. These dynamics create an emotionally unhealthy space, exacerbating mental health struggles. Over-Reliance on Biological Treatments The heavy dependence on psychiatric medication without substantial psychological therapies has created a cycle of short-term relief with long-term disappointments. While medication management can play a crucial role, it must be paired with a clear understanding of potential side effects and combined with effective psychological interventions. The Need for an Integrative Approach The time has come to adopt a holistic perspective on illness and treatment. Achieving a mind-body balance is essential for sustainable mental health. Here’s how we can address this: Medical Fraternity’s Role Healthcare professionals must prioritize working collaboratively with patients to enhance their natural healing and restoration. This approach minimizes overprescription and supports long-term well-being. Combining Treatments Psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness practices should complement medical treatments to address the root causes of mental health challenges. Educating Patients Psychoeducation about the risks and benefits of medication empowers patients to make informed choices about their mental health care.

The numbers behind mental health are mind boggling: at least one out of two people will develop a mental health issue within their lifetime; of which 70% are not receiving any form of help. And let's not talk about the quality of the help most of those receiving assistance have. So for today's Mental Health Day let's talk about the foundation: improving the ways to identify mental health problems.
