I started the Male Mogul Initiative in 2016 while working on the West Side of Chicago. I met a young man who made a significant impression on me. He was a promising basketball player with strong academic credentials. He had a scholarship lined up for college. This might sound reductive, but to put it bluntly, he was a good kid - a great kid. He also sold drugs. He felt he needed to do so to provide for himself and his family. The impact of this meeting on me was substantial and provided the genesis for the Male Mogul Initiative. The root cause of this young man's problem was not an inability to thrive or a deficit of character. It was a lack of exposure and access to responsible options to thrive and provide, and as a result, he found himself on a dangerous and immoral path. Hundreds, if not thousands, of these young individuals are on Chicago's South and West Sides. Unfortunately, the youth in these communities are not proximate to many positive role models or good examples. This is what I set out to address with the Male Mogul Initiative: to provide direction to good students through mentorship programs. Because they deserve it. As our organization has grown, our mission has remained the same, but the mechanics through which we prepare our participants have evolved. Today (and for the last few years), we emphasize entrepreneurship and business education as central topics within all of our programs. We believe in our participants. We encourage them to utilize their intelligence and creativity to develop business ideas. From there, we provide the guidance and expertise to create a sustainable and economically viable plan for their products or services. We now own and operate a creative warehouse (our Co-LLAB space), within which our Moguls are developing and producing exceptional merchandise. We don't just mentor our participants to be the best versions of themselves (though, of course, we do that as well). We teach them how to hustle. We guide them to leverage their creativity and be pillars of positive business and social examples within their communities. Head to our new website to learn more about our mission, our progress, and our programs. Link in the comments below. 👇🏾

New Post: Annual Lemonade Stand Event Fosters Entrepreneurial Skills for Kids - https://lnkd.in/g864we6f - A business support organization in Texas is helping local youth build entrepreneurial skills by hosting their own lemonade stands. The initiative, supported by the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation, culminated in a recent event, the 12th Annual Lemonade Day Coastal Bend 2024. At the event, budding entrepreneurs got to run their own lemonade stands, personalizing their offerings and creating their own branding and marketing to attract customers. The organization also created an interactive map to help people find lemonade stands throughout the area. Each participant was sponsored by a local organization. For example, five-year-old Rai’lynn Coleman was sponsored by the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education Corpus Christi Chapter. Coleman’s mother and grandmother helped her run her lemonade stand, but allowed her to interact with customers, handle money, and prepare their food and beverages. Coleman told Kris 6 News in Corpus Christi, “I have muffins, cupcakes, and cake, strawberry cake, and lemonade, blueberry muffins and everything!” Running a lemonade stand is often seen as the perfect business opportunity for kids. It’s simple enough for young people to do most of the work themselves. But it still involves many useful skills that apply to actual businesses and careers, from money handling to marketing. Kids don’t need to participate in an organized event like this to learn the valuable lessons that can come from running a lemonade stand. But this chamber foundation understands the importance of teaching these lessons and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit early on. So creating this opportunity may simply provide the spark and motivation needed for some young entrepreneurs to give it a try. Even for those who don’t end up running their own businesses one day, participating in this type of event or running an independent lemonade stand can teach lessons that apply to a huge array of careers. And supporting kids with any entrepreneurial endeavors may foster a new generation of innovation and unique ideas. They know how to run a business for sure.
UH’s Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship (WCE) has secured the No. 1 ranking in the nation for the sixth straight year, continuing its tradition of excellence and impact. The program has earned the prestigious No. 1 title a total of nine times, and has been ranked No. 1 or No. 2, 16 of the last 18 years. The most significant measure of success is the number of businesses that are created. Wolff Center alumni have created more than 2,000 businesses in the last 10 years, and there were more than 4,000 UH students taking entrepreneurship classes during the 2023-2024 academic school year. More than 630 mentors from the business community contribute hours and expertise, ensuring students have support as they work to create viable businesses.
