New Open Access paper published, co-authored with Olivier Choinière, Ph.D. The Canadian Governance Framework for Major Public Projects was first issued in 1978, and we document five main iterations that have been undertaken since then, resulting in increasing complexity over time. Our contribution is to highlight the dynamic nature of a governance framework and the effect that institutional layering can have on a public policy. This paper was developed for Project Management Journal®, the special issue on “Images of Governance,” in honor of Ralf Müller.

Stuck for how to structure your project plan? Project plans can and do cover many things, but I think if you use the structure below for how to think of the work packages, you will have a strong plan with which to input the task level detail. My suggested work packages: 👉 Project Initiation 👉 Project Governance 👉 Stakeholder Engagement 👉 Data Gathering 👉 Assessing/Creating/Establishing 👉 Testing/Embedding/ Evaluating 👉 Reporting/Disseminating/Deploying Not all of these may apply to your project but it gives you a great start for populating your project plan. Innovate UK grant applications and often public sector bids ask you to include a project plan. Message me if you want support with your project plan or any other part of your application to make sure you secure that grant funding or win that new business. #grantwriting #bidwriting #innovateuk

Do you need a great idea to win a grant? While a strong idea is the foundation, it’s only part of the equation. Grant providers want to see more than just a spark of creativity—they need confidence that you can bring that idea to life. Here’s what they’re looking for: 👉 A well-thought-out plan - your idea needs structure. How will you turn it into reality? What are the steps involved? Without a detailed plan, even the best ideas can seem unattainable. 👉 Clear objectives - what do you aim to achieve with your project? Define your goals and ensure they align with the grant’s objectives. Vague or overly broad goals won’t convince reviewers. 👉 A realistic timeline - can you deliver on your promises within the grant period? Outline a timeline that shows you’ve considered all aspects of execution, from planning to completion. Grant applications are not just about innovation, they’re about demonstrating your ability to execute effectively. Show that you have both a great idea and the skills to bring it to life, and you’ll stand a much better chance of securing that funding! P.S - Have any doubts? How many times have you decided to make it up as you go when an application deadline pops up? Yeah, I know you have. Me too, we've all done it. But planning ahead is truly a game changer. How does that saying go - if you fail to plan, you plan to fail? Well that really could be your applications’s reality. Here are FIVE risks of not planning ahead. 1. Not having sufficient data to support or back-up your project's need. 2. Overestimating the capacity of your team or organization to deliver the project. 3. Providing inaccurate budget expenses or not knowing the REAL costs of your project. 4. Overpromising on your project's impact. 5. A denied grant... and a lot of wasted time and resources! These risks relate to not having enough time to talk to the right departments, get appropriate quotes, or not thinking the project through to completion. Details matter in grant applications. Learn more about these risks and the importance of project planning in this month's grant resource video #grants #learning
