The Federal Budget 2024 contains a suite of initiatives which underline a commitment to address significant skills shortages in a range of occupations and industries. MEGT welcomes measures such as extra support for the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System (AAIS), particularly in areas such as construction and new energy. The announcement of $55.6 million for the Building Women's Careers Program to support and promote women in male-dominated sectors, clean energy and advanced manufacturing is also a significant step towards addressing gender imbalance and skills shortages in these areas. Our great Australian workforce requires a consistent pipeline of skills to ensure it can deliver a range of targets, including those made under the National Housing Accord. Further to yesterday's comment, Tara Dillon FCIMSPA (Ch) has responded to today's speech from Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care at the Labour Party Conference. Tara said: “It’s incredibly encouraging to hear the Secretary of State for Health acknowledging the importance of taking action on prevention to prevent the NHS being overwhelmed. Our sector workforce has a vital role in ensuring that the percentage of the population who experience chronic, long-term health conditions which impact their lives and costs the country millions, not only in treatment but in lost economic activity, is reduced. In the speech, he committed to ‘get sick Brits back to health and back to work’. There are great local examples where our sector is working hand in hand with health care professionals to support those experiencing health conditions, undertake tailored physical activity which is developed in line with their condition. This is enabling patients to become healthier through increasing their activity, aiding their recovery and supporting their return to work and to becoming economically active. What’s crucial to fulfil the Secretary of State’s ambition, which is so important for economic growth, is the scaling of this collaborative work. It’s imperative that his department includes the sport and physical activity sector in its plans and we were pleased recently to hear from the Sports Minister that she is strongly making the case for this. The plan that Wes Streeting set out today for ‘a preventative health service that helps us stay healthy and out of hospital’ within 10 years simply must have sport and physical activity professionals at the heart of it. Alongside our National Sector Partners Group colleagues (ukactive, Youth Sport Trust, Active Partnerships, Sport and Recreation Alliance, Sport for Development Coalition, Local Government Association), we look forward to collaborating with the Department for Health and Social Care and DCMS to achieve this.” Read more about the National Sector Partners Group: https://lnkd.in/eBqpUCAs

In his first Labour Party Conference speech since becoming Prime Minister, Sir Kier Starmer, has reinforced the plan to reform apprenticeship funding and make changes to aspects of skills policy. Tara Dillon FCIMSPA (Ch), CEO of CIMSPA said: "The sport and physical activity sector offers fantastic career and professional development opportunities so we will be looking very closely at how we can make the introduction of foundation apprenticeships work effectively across the sector, both for career entrants and employers." “We need to be addressing this human capital constraint with urgency – with policies to incentivise careers in trades, to incentivise businesses to take on apprenticeships, awareness to promote trades careers to women, incentives to rethink how we get more people into VET Teaching careers.” Earlier today, our Founder and CEO, Katherine McConnell, took part in the ‘Mission Critical - Climate Industry Policy for a Net-Zero Australia’ event hosted by the Electrical Trade Union of Australia. Sharan Burrow chaired the panel discussion with the impressive Prof. Mariana Mazzucato, ACTU President Michelle O’Neil and Katherine. At Brighte, we believe private/public partnerships are an effective way to deliver large-scale schemes. Delivery of large-scale schemes relies on electrical workers installing upgrades in every home, and for this reason, we need to attach workplace outcomes to each project to ensure we have the workforce to deliver at scale.

Azlina Bulmer, managing director for The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), has published an open letter to Jonathan Reynolds MP, secretary of state for business and trade, calling for automotive skills to be a priority in the Government’s industrial strategy. Dean Lander, head of repair sector services at Thatcham Research, said: “I fully support and echo the calls the IMI is making to Government. “Like the IMI, Thatcham Research recognises the importance of automotive skills to not just our sector, but the UK’s industrial and economic landscape, providing 866,000 jobs and £37 billion GVA in 2023. “A skilled automotive workforce is also essential for keeping vehicles on our roads. Without this workforce, the UK could face soaring repair costs, increased car insurance premiums, and potentially the emergence of unrepairable vehicles. “As we highlighted in our Apprenticeship Levy petition, there must be adequate funding for automotive apprenticeships, a crucial step in ensuring that the UK is able to safely and sustainably adopt automated and electric vehicles.” You can read the IMI letter here: https://lnkd.in/eKN2BCzX More information on our Apprenticeship Levy campaign can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eehad-AJ #ThatchamResearch #SkillsGap #RaiseTheCap #ApprenticeshipLevy #IMI
