What is NFPA? The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is a global nonprofit organization established in 1896. It is devoted to eliminating death, injury, property, and economic loss due to fire, electrical, and related hazards. The NFPA develops and publishes over 300 codes and standards, such as the NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code - NEC), which is widely used for electrical safety standards. These codes help ensure safety in various industries, buildings, and systems. Example: Flowchart of NFPA Standards Implementation Here’s a simple structure for creating a flowchart representing the process of implementing NFPA standards: 1. Identify Safety Needs Determine the scope (fire, electrical, life safety). Select the applicable NFPA standard. 2. Review Standards Study the specific NFPA code in detail (e.g., NFPA 70, NFPA 72, etc.). Consult experts if needed. 3. System Design and Planning Plan safety systems (e.g., fire alarms, sprinklers, electrical systems). Ensure compliance with NFPA requirements. 4. Approval Process Submit designs for inspection. Obtain permits from local authorities. 5. Implementation Install equipment and safety systems according to NFPA guidelines. Conduct regular inspections during installation. 6. Testing and Commissioning Test installed systems for compliance. Correct deficiencies. 7. Operation and Maintenance Implement routine checks. Update systems according to NFPA revisions

🔎 NFRC recently formed a working group to review and update the hugely important Safe2Torch guidance. As Bob Richardson, Head of Technical and Training at NFRC, explains in his latest article for Total Contractor, the description of the guide has been changed to: ‘for the safe installation of reinforced bitumen membranes and use of gas torches in the workplace’, removing reference to ‘torch-on’ as many Reinforced Bitumen Membrane (RBM) systems are now being installed as flame-free. 🗣 Bob states: "The guidance now elaborates on the importance of removing the risk of fire at the design stage, and whilst we haven’t removed the reference to the 900 mm ‘flame-free zone’ as a minimum requirement, we’ve underpinned the importance of this being risk assessed based on site conditions." ✅ Further developments to the guidance include reference to high-risk buildings, including NFRC’s Fire Risk Safety Alert on CLASP Buildings due to their increased fire risk and the importance of compliance with HSG168 Fire Safety in Construction, plus as Bob explains, the guidance on gas bottles, torches and fire extinguishers has also been updated based on user feedback, and the Safe2Torch checklist now includes the feature that allows users to input the project title and date. 👀 Find out more about the revisions to Safe2Torch guidance, with comments from those involved in the working group here: https://lnkd.in/epxMFHb6 #roofing #roofers #roofingcontractors #roofingsupplychain #healthandsafety #firesafety #bestpractice #construction #constructionsafety #buildingsafety #flatroofs #facades #facadesafety

A.G. Coombs Advisory - Fire Leader, Marcus Royle and A.G. Coombs Service - Fire Mode Technical Specialist, Ben O'Brien will co-present at “Fire Australia 2024” – the largest fire protection industry conference and exhibition in Australasia. "Fire Australia 2024", 7-9 May at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre is hosted by Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia). To register and attend, please visit https://lnkd.in/eRM5sQ5R “Performance-based Design in Fire Engineering — Friend or Foe?” The performance-based building code of Australia was introduced in 1996. The building code had previously been prescriptive requiring designers to demonstrate that designs complied with Deemed-to-Satisfy requirements. The new code was introduced to allow industry to explore innovation and enable more functional and economical buildings, while still delivering on life safety, health and amenity requirements. However, since then it has become evident that the built-environment lifecycle operation has been neglected in the process and has resulted in many compliance problems. The Shergold-Weir 'Building Confidence' report highlighted major compliance failures in constructed buildings, identified an underperformance by authorities, consultants, contractors and government regulators, and singled out significant concerns with performance-based design solutions. Many facilities include complex performance-based fire safety strategies requiring particular maintenance and testing regimes. The understanding of these systems is often poor due to lack of documentation and inadequacies in the operation and maintenance of these systems has become a significant compliance issue. Preventing or fixing these problems does not have to be a difficult task. This presentation will explain the nature of typical performance-based solutions (e.g. complex smoke hazard management systems) and set out how to identify if there is an issue with how a system is operating, being maintained and managed. Strategies and methods to address issues that may be identified will be explained to show a clear way forward to ensure regulatory maintenance requirements can be met. #WalkerFire #AGCoombs #AGCoombsAdvisory #FireProtection #FireSafety #FireAustralia https://lnkd.in/eRM5sQ5R
