Stewardship means giving back more to nature than we take. In this episode of YourForest Podcast, host Matthew Kristoff, RPF interviews Dr. Eisenberg Cristina, PhD, Director of Tribal Initiatives at Oregon State University, to discuss a powerful shift in how we approach forest care. Stewardship, unlike traditional management, is about reciprocity—giving more than you take and treating the forest as you would your own family. It’s a deeply rooted practice that places humans within nature, fostering a responsibility to care for it across generations. This approach is guided by the wisdom of local tribes and community members who have lived in these landscapes for centuries. Using a two-eyed seeing method, we can blend Indigenous knowledge with modern practices to develop stewardship strategies that are unique to each forest. These strategies are being prioritized by the US Forest Service to protect old growth stands most threatened by climate change. At the heart of this shift is a new way of thinking about forests. It’s not just about the physical environment—it’s about changing worldviews and values. 🌟 Check out the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/grmDsyrV 🎥Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gKD5rit5 #ForestStewardship #SustainableForestry #ClimateChange #IndigenousKnowledge #YourForestPodcast #ParadigmShift #EnvironmentalEthics #TwoEyedSeeing #ForestCare

🚨Our podcast is now out on YouTube! Contrary to popular perceptions, grass is actually a superhero and an essential component of our global ecosystem. Grasslands serve as significant carbon sinks, helping to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which is vital in mitigating climate change and aiding agriculture. Additionally, these ecosystems support a vast array of biodiversity, providing habitat for numerous species. In the first episode of Rootmaps - an immersive podcast by Good Food Movement - Shashi Kumar (CEO and Founder of Akshayakalpa Organic) highlights how it is important for modern agriculture to appreciate their superpowers and not regard them as useless. Despite their critical role, grasslands are frequently undervalued and threatened by human activities leading to rapid depletion. Almost always they are considered "wastelands" - not useful for humans. Shashi stresses on the urgent need to unlearn this notion of grasses being "useless" and preserve these vital ecosystems. Our forest strategy needs a reset! In this episode of YourForest Podcast, host Matthew Kristoff, RPF delves with Mark Anielski into a transformative approach to forest management: What if we could manage forests not just for timber but for the full spectrum of ecological and community values they provide? With the growing threats of wildfires, insect infestations, and unpredictable environmental changes, there’s an urgent need to shift how we view forest stewardship. Forest managers are often expected to protect habitats, water quality, and even provide spaces for recreation, but they’re limited by a system that mostly values timber. Imagine if we could change that. By supporting forest companies financially to manage areas for watershed health, wildlife habitats, and cultural uses, we’d allow them to make more sustainable, balanced decisions that benefit both nature and communities. This isn’t just good for the ecosystem—it’s essential for the industry’s survival. When a mill suddenly loses its timber supply to a wildfire, it impacts the business and local livelihoods. But with diversified income streams, forest managers could approach their work with a sustainable mindset that doesn’t just prevent damage but actively supports multiple forest values. 🎧Listen to the full episode: https://lnkd.in/guJ6q_fY 🔗 Checkout the Podcast on the website: https://lnkd.in/gtmVEGu6 #ForestManagement #SustainableForestry #SharedValues #EcologicalBalance #YourForest

Sustaining forests starts with communities. In this episode of YourForest Podcast, host Matthew Kristoff, RPF invites Lauren Oakes, author of Tree Keepers: The Race for a Forested Future, to explore the bigger picture behind reforestation. Planting trees is only a small piece of the puzzle. The real challenge lies in scaling seed production, ensuring proper care through monitoring and watering, and fostering long-term stewardship. At the heart of it all is the need for local communities to feel economically and personally invested in the forests around them. Without this connection, even the best planting efforts risk failing. Real change requires more than planting—it demands a system that supports forests and the people who depend on them. Forests are living systems, not just carbon sponges. Their survival hinges on people, policies, and partnerships that make long-term care possible. It’s not about quick wins—it’s about building a future where forests and communities thrive together. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/g2TJX3iS #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Reforestation #TreePlanting #ForestRestoration #CommunityInvolvement

Earth Day is Monday. 🌎🌻 But let's celebrate it early. Watch a few of these documentaries this weekend. I put together this list of 21 documentaries (40+ hours) to help inspire a lifetime of eating and deepen our relationship with how every bite we take impacts the Earth we depend on. Find the entire list of films in the comments below. Because... "Eating is an agricultural act" - Wendell Berry One of the most significant impacts humans have made on the planet is through agriculture. Which, of course, humanity depends on to feed, clothe, and shelter itself. Farming has reshaped landscapes, displaced wildlife, and disturbed ecosystems globally. But farming regeneratively is the answer to the woes of historical degradation. Loving Mother Earth and farming productively can coexist harmoniously. Farming can have a net-positive impact on human health, food security, wildlife biodiversity, resource management, and ecological resilience. I invite you to let these documentaries deepen your connection to Mother Earth and your connection to your food. I also encourage you to plant some trees or flowers this weekend.🌻 Let's strive to have reverence for Earth every single day and not just one day per year! Add more documentaries in the comments if I missed ones that have inspired you! #soilhealth #sustainableagriculture #farming #regeneration #organicfarming #regenerativeagriculture #farm #earthday #climate #conservation #ecology

Eliminate cows? Can’t feed the world? Need Bill and his tech cohort 💰? Not enough land? ALL WRONG. We’re just doing it wrong. More important than ruminant methane emissions is regenerating the soil, the ecosystems, the wildlife. Which means: Stop industrial crop production. Stop CAFO intense animal “processing” Stop poisoning the land, air, sea and water supply. Strangely enough, much of the above can be done with regenerative models. These take the way the ecosystem (including humans) co-existed and give them a modern twist, relevant to our current predicament. So vote with your feet. Stop getting wound up about cows. Stop buying AgTech produced food (from grains to factory chickens) And support your local regenatice farmer. #midlifemetabolichealth #environment #regenerative #planet
