I understand the global healthcare system is limping along like an injured soldier. As a nurse, I am both an end user of healthcare services as well as a front line provider of the same, so, I do get it. What I cannot fathom is the meanness of some healthcare providers. There is no excuse to be mean to patients, delay their pain relief medications and generally treat them like their presence interrupts your busy lifestyle. I am speaking to you my colleagues #nursesonlinkedin Basic human decency and perhaps common sense dictates that when you start your shift, you prioritize the needs of your patients. They all have competing urgencies. Attend to what is immediate and believe you me, pain is both urgent and immediate. You might be extremely short staffed and your patience could be wearing thin but tame your tongue. On top of that, understand that hospitalised patients have time on their hands. Time to worry, time to wonder, time to feel helpless and alone. That time is also useful to listen to whatever unnecessary remarks you keep making at the nurses' desk about their care. I hate having to reveal that I am a nurse for someone to simply do what they're employed to do. I don't like it one bit but I also will not shut up and witness negligence and potential complications of people near me in the name of "we are short staffed." Fellow nurses, the day you feel your compassion running out as a nurse is the day you resign. Patients would rather be anywhere else apart from the heavily medicated hospital wards. They can do without your unhelpful remarks and crass attitudes.
