Last time, we asked you to guess which port in the world shipped the most Iron Ore over the past 5 years. 🤔
✅ As the vast majority of you voted, the correct answer is Port Hedland. Since 2019, over 2.8bn MT of Iron Ore discharged across the globe originated from the largest Australian Dry Bulk #port. This sums up to over ⅓ of all Iron Ore shipped worldwide. Since the start of 2024 alone, Port Hedland's Iron Ore #shipments have surpassed 180m MT for a minor year-over-year increase of 0.6%
🔎 Another Australian port – Port Walcott – gets the second place with nearly three times less capacity. It has been the origin point for over 962m MT of Iron Ore discharged globally over the past five years. However, throughout the first four months of 2024, Iron Ore shipments out of Port Walcott have registered a 9.4% year-over-year decrease and its market share has dropped to 9.75% from the 11.4% five-year-average.
👉 Ponta da Madeira in Brazil takes a close third place, having loaded almost 905m MT of Iron Ore for the past five years. Since the start of 2024, it's also one of the strongest year-over-year performers, having shipped 54.8m MT, or 12.7% more Iron Ore than it had during the same period of last year, and actually marginally overtaking Port Walcott so far this year.
ℹ️ The Top 4 of Iron Ore load ports in the world rounds up with Dampier in Australia, which has shipped nearly 727m MT of Iron Ore since 2019. Since the start of 2024, it has registered a 3.4% year-over-year drop in Iron Ore shipments.
Overall, the world's Top 4 Iron Ore ports supplied over 64% of all #commodity over the past five years. However, so far in 2024, declining quantities out of Port Walcott and Dampier combined with strong year-over-year performance from other ports like Tubarao and Sepetiba have reduced the Top 4's market share to less than 61%.
