I recently read about the crucial role of collaboration in achieving net-zero carbon emissions in aviation. The World Sustainability Symposium highlights that the transition to renewable energy is a global issue affecting all industries, not just aviation. Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior VP for Sustainability and Chief Economist, emphasizes the need to break free from old ways of thinking. She believes renewable energy should be a top priority across all government departments to find effective solutions. While Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are a key focus, they are only part of the solution. Other elements, making up about 35% of the industry's path to net zero, are equally important. SAF production is currently lagging, so it's vital to invest broadly and keep an open mind about new technologies. IATA is supporting industry efforts by creating markets—like the upcoming SAF Registry—and developing tools such as CO₂ Connect. They are also updating their sustainability policy and finance roadmaps to provide detailed guidance. Policies need to evolve as technologies advance. Increasing SAF production is essential, which means building more bio-refineries and dedicating a larger share of production to SAF. Investing in renewable energy benefits everyone, not just airlines. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 requires urgent and extensive policy support. The World Sustainability Symposium aims to bring together decision-makers from finance, agriculture, technology, policy-making, and aviation to ensure air transport gets its fair share of renewable energy. Collaboration and comprehensive policies are key to making the energy transition a success. By uniting all parties, we can work towards a sustainable future for aviation. #SustainableAviation #NetZero2050 #RenewableEnergy International Air Transport Association (IATA)
